9-7
Syracuse, N.Y. - Freshman right fielder Kelcie Cashel
(Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) recorded three hits in game one
and senior third baseman Caitlin O'Neill (Pittsford,
N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) registered three hits and drove in
three runs in game two to lead the 23rd-ranked Le Moyne College
softball team to a sweep of Pace in a Northeast-10 Conference
doubleheader on Monday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic
Complex. The Dolphins won the opener, 3-1, and took the nightcap,
9-7.
The Setters opened game one with an unearned run in the first
inning without recording a hit. Lead-off hitter Christina Pane
reached on a fielding error by the pitcher and advanced to second
on a throwing error by the pitcher. Following a sac bunt, Patricia
Hurley reached on an error by the third baseman to allow Pane to
score.
The Dolphins took the lead in the third inning with a pair of runs
on two hits and an error. Cashel led off the frame with a double
down the left field line. Junior center fielder Danielle
VanGorder (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) followed with a single to
left center to knock in Cashel and advanced to second on the throw
home. Following a pair of fly outs, junior left fielder
Bailey Phillips (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Arcadia)
reached on a fielding error to allow VanGorder to race home from
second base.
O'Neill extended her team's lead with a solo home run down the
right field line to lead off the sixth inning.
Sophomore Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy
Trinity) struck out eight batters in a complete-game
effort, while allowing just one unearned run on three hits, to earn
her 16th victory.
In game two, the Dolphins jumped on top with three runs on four
hits in the second inning. Phillips led off the frame with a single
to left and advanced to third on a fielding error by the left
fielder. Freshman shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park,
N.Y./Shenendehowa), who went 3-for-5 on the afternoon and
scored three times, followed with a triple to center to drive in
Phillips. O'Neill then singled to left field to record her first
RBI of the contest by plating Shea. Three batters later, Cashel
singled through the left side to knock in pinch-runner Kate
Waltman (Alplaus, N.Y./Niskayuna).
Pace answered back in the third inning with four runs on six hits
and two errors. Lauren Bell drove in the first run of frame with a
one-out, bases-loaded single down the left field line to score
Nicole Schultheis, while Hurley came in to score on a fielding
error. After a groundout, Vanessa Maloney singled up the middle to
drive in Tricia Allutto, who singled earlier in the inning. Kerri
McLean gave the Setters the lead with a single down the right field
line to plate Bell.
The Dolphins regained the lead with four runs on four hits and an
error in the fourth inning. Shea was hit by a pitch and O'Neill
singled to open the inning. Following a sac bunt, freshman first
baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski)
registered a sac fly to drive in Shea and move O'Neill to third.
O'Neill then scored on a wild pitch to put the Dolphins in front
5-4. After Cashel singled to left and moved to second on a fielding
error, VanGorder singled down the left field line to plate Cashel.
Junior second baseman Kelly Schweikert (Rochester,
N.Y./Spencerport) then doubled to left field to score
VanGorder.
The Setters cut into their deficit with a pair of runs in the fifth
on three hits. Allutto doubled to center to lead off the inning and
moved to third on a single by Bell. Missy Dubey followed with a
single through the right side to drive in Allutto. Following an
out, McLean plated Bell with a ground out to second.
Le Moyne got the two runs back in its half of the fifth. Phillips
walked and stole second before Shea singled through the left side.
After Shea stole second, O'Neill doubled down the left field line
to drive in both Phillips and Shea.
Pace closed out the scoring in the seventh with one run on one hit.
Bell walked, moved to second on a groundout and advanced to third
on a passed ball to open the inning. Maloney then singled through
the right side to score Bell.
Senior Jennifer Farrelly (Latham, N.Y./Shaker)
picked up the win in relief, tossing the final four and two-thirds
innings, while yielding four runs on seven hits and striking out
two batters. VanGorder joined O'Neill in posting three hits, while
Cashel and Shea each recorded a pair.
