SB: FARRELLY NAMED NORTHEAST-10 PLAYER OF THE YEAR AS SEVEN
DOLPHINS EARN ALL CONFERENCE RECOGNITION
South Easton, Mass. - Le Moyne College senior pitcher/designated
player Jennifer Farrelly (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) has
been named the 2009 Northeast-10 Conference Softball Player of the
Year as seven Dolphins were named all-conference, as voted upon by
the conference's head coaches and announced by the conference
office on Friday afternoon.
The 16th-ranked Dolphins placed three members on the first team,
three on the second team and one on the all-rookie squad. Farrelly
was joined on the first team by junior Kelly Schweikert
(Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) and sophomore Jenna
Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity). Senior
Caitlin O'Neill (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of
Mercy) and juniors Bailey Phillips (Rochester,
N.Y./Greece-Arcadia) and Danielle VanGorder
(Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) were recognized with spots on the
second team. Freshman Barb Shea (Clifton Park,
N.Y./Shenendehowa) earned a place on the all-rookie
team.
Farrelly, named to the second team as a junior, helped lead the
Dolphins to a 24-4 record in conference action to win their third
consecutive Northeast-10 Regular Season championship. Farrelly, who
is the second Dolphin in as many years to earn NE-10 Player of the
Year accolades, ranks in the top-five in the conference in numerous
statistical categories. She has posted a team-best .388 batting
average, fourth-best in the NE-10. Farrelly leads the conference in
slugging percentage (.686) and runs batted in (41), while ranking
second in on-base percentage (.479), tied for third in home runs
(8) and tied for fourth in doubles (12). In the pitching circle,
Farrelly is third in the conference in victories (16), fourth in
earned run average (1.24) and seventh in strikeouts with 120 in 141
innings pitched. She has also posted a team-high 15 complete games
and registered seven shutouts.
Schweikert, a second team selection as a shortstop last season,
was named to the first team as a second baseman. Schweikert leads
the Dolphins in runs scored with 36 (2nd in the NE-10), doubles
with 15 (1st in the NE-10) and has stolen a program-best 23 bases
(2nd in the NE-10). She is also fifth in the conference with seven
home runs and 32 runs batted in.
Vanacore, a repeat selection on the first team, leads the
Northeast-10 and ranks 13th nationally in earned run average at
just 0.94. She also places third in the conference in strikeouts
with 146 and has posted 17 victories, the second-best total in the
conference, in 126 innings of action. She also leads the team with
eight shutouts and has held opponents to a .174 batting average,
good for second-best in the NE-10.
O'Neill, recognized as the second team catcher after being named
to the second team as a third baseman last year, has posted a .306
batting average as a starter in all 46 games played this year.
O'Neill, who has made 37 starts at third base and nine behind the
plate, has driven in 26 runs, scored 14 times and smacked nine
doubles and four home runs.
Phillips, who was named to the first team last season as a second
baseman, earned a spot on the second team for her play in left
field. Phillips ranks second on the team in batting average at .358
and runs scored with 29, while placing third with 49 hits. Phillips
has also posted a career-best 12 stolen bases on the campaign.
VanGorder, who was also honored on the second team last year,
leads the team 58 hits as just one of two players to start all 47
games. VanGorder is second on the team in stolen bases with 19, the
second most in the program's history, while also ranking second on
the team in runs scored (29), third in batting average (.356) and
fourth in runs batted in (24).
Shea, a starter in all 45 games played at shortstop, ranks fifth
on the team in batting average at .312. Shea also ranks fourth on
the squad with 28 runs scored and is tied for fourth with VanGorder
in runs batted in with 24 and with Phillips for stolen bases with
12.
Le Moyne (37-10), which has won 14 of its last 15 games, will host
the four-team, double-elimination tournament on Saturday and
Sunday. The Dolphins will play fourth-seeded Merrimack on Saturday
at 9:00 a.m. at the Niland Athletic Complex.
