SB: FARRELLY NAMED DAKTRONICS EAST REGION PLAYER OF THE YEAR AS
FIVE DOLPHINS RECEIVE ALL-REGION HONORS
Brookville, N.Y. - Le Moyne College senior Jennifer
Farrelly (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) has been named the 2009
Daktronics East Region Softball Player of the Year, as voted on by
the region's sports information directors and announced on
Wednesday afternoon.
Farrelly was joined on the All-Region team by sophomore pitcher
Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity),
junior second baseman Kelly Schweikert (Rochester,
N.Y./Spencerport), junior left fielder Bailey
Phillips (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Arcadia) and freshman
outfielder/designated player Kelcie Cashel (Lacona,
N.Y./Sandy Creek).
Farrelly, named the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year
earlier this month, also earned a spot on the Daktronics First Team
as a designated player and Second Team as a pitcher. In 50 starts
this season, Farrelly ranks fourth in the conference with a .381
batting average, tied for third with nine home runs and 13 doubles
and has posted a conference-best 44 runs batted in, while also
registering 29 runs scored. In the pitcher's circle, the righty has
an 18-4 record (the third-most wins in the NE-10), a 1.17 ERA to
rank third in the conference and 136 strikeouts over a team-high
161 innings pitched.
Schweikert, named to the first team at second base, is one of just
two Dolphins to start all 53 games this season. Schweikert, who is
second on the team with a .357 batting average, leads the Dolphins
and the conference in runs scored (42), doubles (17) and stolen
bases (a program-record 24). She is also second in the conference
and on the team in hits (61) and runs batted in (39), while
blasting nine home runs to tie for third in the conference.
Vanacore, a first team selection after also garnering first team
honors from the Northeast-10, leads the conference and ranks
seventh nationally in earned run average at just 0.90. She also
places second in the conference in strikeouts with 157 and has
posted 21 victories, the second-best total in the conference, in
147 innings of action. She also leads the team, and is second in
the conference, with nine shutouts and has held opponents to a .175
batting average, good for second-best in the NE-10.
Phillips, named second team All-Northeast-10 for her play in left
field, earned a spot on the Daktronics Second Team. Phillips ranks
fourth on the team in batting average at .346 and third in runs
scored with 31 (ninth in the NE-10), while placing third with 53
hits (seventh in the NE-10). Phillips has also posted a career-best
14 stolen bases on the campaign, good for fourth on the team and
tied for eighth in the conference.
Cashel, recognized as a second team outfielder, has posted a .391
batting average as a starter in 33 of 45 games played this year, to
go along with 29 runs scored (15th in NE-10) and 15 stolen bases
(7th in the NE-10). Cashel, who has started each of the last 21
games, in which the Dolphins are 20-1, has registered a .414
average, six doubles, three home runs, 21 runs scored, 14 runs
batted in and seven steals since being inserted into the starting
line-up on a full-time basis.
Le Moyne (43-10), which entered the NCAA Tournament ranked 12th
nationally and has won 12 consecutive games and 20 of its last 21
contests, will host Georgian Court this weekend in the NCAA East
Super Regional. The best-of-three series will begin on Friday with
a single game starting at 1:00 p.m. The series will continue on
Saturday at 11:00 a.m., with the "if necessary" game following at
1:30 p.m. The Dolphins will be playing Georgian Court for the first
time in the program's history.
