SB: VANACORE AND CASHEL NAMED TO NFCA EAST REGION FIRST
TEAM
Starkville, Miss. - Le Moyne College sophomore pitcher
Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) and
freshman outfielder/designated player Kelcie Cashel
(Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) have been named to the 2009
Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II East Region First Team, as
announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Thursday
afternoon. Juniors Kelly Schweikert (Rochester,
N.Y./Spencerport) and Bailey Phillips (Rochester,
N.Y./Greece-Arcadia) were selected to the second team.
Vanacore, selected yesterday to the Daktronics All-Region First
Team after garnering first team honors from the Northeast-10
earlier this month, leads the conference and ranks seventh
nationally in earned run average at just 0.90. She also places
second in the conference in strikeouts with 157 and has posted 21
victories, the second-best total in the conference, in 147 innings
of action. She also leads the team, and is second in the
conference, with nine shutouts and has held opponents to a .175
batting average, good for second-best in the NE-10.
Cashel, recognized on Wednesday as a second team outfielder for the
Daktronics All-Region squad, was named to the first team as a
designated player. Cashel has posted a .391 batting average as a
starter in 33 of 45 games played this year, to go along with 29
runs scored (15th in NE-10) and 15 stolen bases (7th in the NE-10).
Cashel, who has started each of the last 21 games, in which the
Dolphins are 20-1, has registered a .414 average, six doubles,
three home runs, 21 runs scored, 14 runs batted in and seven steals
since being inserted into the starting line-up on a full-time
basis.
Schweikert, named to the second team at second base after receiving
first team accolades from the Northeast-10 Conference and
Daktronics, is one of just two Dolphins to start all 53 games this
season. Schweikert, who is second on the team with a .357 batting
average, leads the Dolphins and the conference in runs scored (42),
doubles (17) and stolen bases (a program-record 24). She is also
second in the conference and on the team in hits (61) and runs
batted in (39), while blasting nine home runs to tie for third in
the conference.
Phillips, named second team All-Northeast-10 and Daktronics
All-Region for her play in left field, earned a spot on the NFCA
Second Team. Phillips ranks fourth on the team in batting average
at .346 and third in runs scored with 31 (ninth in the NE-10),
while placing third with 53 hits (seventh in the NE-10). Phillips
has also posted a career-best 14 stolen bases on the campaign, good
for fourth on the team and tied for eighth in the conference.
Le Moyne (43-10), which entered the NCAA Tournament ranked 12th
nationally and has won 12 consecutive games and 20 of its last 21
contests, will host Georgian Court this weekend in the NCAA East
Super Regional. The best-of-three series will begin on Friday with
a single game starting at 1:00 p.m. The series will continue on
Saturday at 11:00 a.m., with the "if necessary" game following at
1:30 p.m. The Dolphins will be playing Georgian Court for the first
time in the program's history.
