SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Le Moyne Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Matt Bassett has announced that preliminary site work has begun on the construction of the College's new softball complex. The latest improvement to the Thomas J. Niland Jr. Athletic Complex, the softball facility will be located on the north side of the Henninger Athletic Center.

"Over the past 18 months, we have made tremendous progress on our athletic facility master plan," said Bassett. "On the heels of completing our multi-use turf field complex and a state-of-the-art athletic weight room and training center, we are now addressing another pressing need for our student-athletes."

"The new softball field will certainly be a motivating force for our program and help to alleviate the many challenges we currently face with playing in the northeast," said fourth-year Head Coach Tina Whitlock. "We look forward to showcasing this great facility, a venue that will positively reflect the standards of Le Moyne athletics and the level of success the softball program has achieved over the years."

Weather permitting, the major work on the field is expected to commence April 1, with the

project slated to be completed by late summer. The softball complex is representative of the College's commitment to the OneLeMoyne strategic plan, which calls for a thoughtful and comprehensive campus-wide facilities master plan.

The field will feature a natural grass outfield that measures 200 feet down the left and right field lines and 220 feet to straightaway center field. To each side of the brick-trimmed dugouts will be spacious bullpen areas suitable for two pitchers and batting practice. To ensure fans will be able to view all the action, the backstop will feature a protective netting system, while the entire field will be enclosed with six-foot fencing with custom graphics. A customized Daktronics scoreboard and video board will be installed in right-center field.

This project is the latest of several recent enhancements to Le Moyne's athletic facilities. In addition to the turf-field complex and the varsity weight room and training center, other improvements have been new women's locker rooms, new office spaces and floor renovations to Ted Grant Court. This project is one of the final components of the College's recent construction projects, which also included the turf field, science addition, Dolphin Den, Le Moyne Plaza, the reconfiguration of on-campus parking, the fourth floor of Grewen Hall and the soon-to-be completed campus pub.

Bassett added, "This complex further advances our pursuit of becoming a premier Division II athletic program. While remaining consistent in our approach to building appropriate facilities in terms of scope, we continue to develop the highest quality facilities in terms of function and appearance."

Under the direction of lead architect Appel Osborne of Syracuse, N.Y., the site work that has already commenced includes utilities, drainage and structural foundation work.
