VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS SAINT MICHAEL'S AND EAST STROUDSBURG
Syracuse, N.Y. - Junior setter Kaylin Brainerd (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) dished out 55 assists in two matches to lead the Le Moyne College volleyball team to a pair of 3-0 sweeps of Saint Michael's and East Stroudsburg on Saturday evening at Grant Court.
In the opening match against Saint Michael's, Le Moyne took the victory with scores of 25-13, 25-16 and 25-22. In the first set, the Dolphins built a 14-4 lead behind the serving of Brainerd and classmate Elizabeth Cheek (Huntington Beach, Calif./Rosary). Sophomore Krista Prentice (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) closed out the set with a kill off an assist from Brainerd.
In the second set, senior Jodi Smith (Angola, N.Y./Eden) rattled off five points on serve midway through the set to give the Dolphins a 16-8 lead. After the Purple Knights pulled within six, Brainerd pushed the lead to nine before Prentice closed out the second consecutive set with a kill.
In the third set, Cheek landed four kills and Brainerd registered 11 assists en route to the victory. Junior libero Lindsey Gleason (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) turned a 7-6 deficit into an 11-7 lead with five straight points off serve, including a pair of service aces. Cheek ended the match with a kill off Brainerd's 27th assist of the match.
In the second match of the evening, Le Moyne cruised to victories of 25-12, 25-15 and 25-20. Senior Caitlin Richardson (Victor, N.Y./Victor) led the Dolphins in the opening set with four kills and three service aces.
In the second set, Cheek and Smith each recorded three kills and two service aces to lead Le Moyne past East Stroudsburg.
Le Moyne closed out the match with three kills each from Prentice and Smith to improve to 8-6 on the season.
On the night, Cheek posted 18 kills, six digs and four service aces, while Prentice recorded 15 kills, 11 digs and six assists.
Le Moyne returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at Roberts Wesleyan at 7:00 p.m.
