VBALL: DOLPHINS SPLIT PAIR OF HOME MATCHES
Syracuse, N.Y. - Senior Jodi Smith (Angola, N.Y./Eden) registered 25 kills and 20 digs to lead the Le Moyne College volleyball team to a split in a pair of matches on Saturday at Ted grant Court. The Dolphins opened the afternoon with a 3-1 Northeast-10 Conference victory over Southern Connecticut State, before falling to non-league foe Queens 3-1 in the nightcap.
In the opening match of the day, the Dolphins took the first set from the Owls 25-19. Southern Connecticut responded to even the match at one game apiece with a 25-22 victory. The Dolphins closed out the Owls with a 25-15 win in the third set and triumphed 25-20 in the fourth set.
Smith posted a team-high 13 kills, while adding eight digs and three blocks. Classmate Caitlin Richardson (Victor, N.Y./Victor) hit at a .435 clip en route to 12 digs. Sophomore Amanda Kershner (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) registered eight kills, while posting a .438 hitting percentage, and added seven total blocks. Junior setter Kaylin Brainerd (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) dished out 43 assists in the match, while sophomore Krista Prentice (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) recorded a team-best 13 digs.
In the afternoon's final match, Queens edged the Dolphins in the first set by a score of 25-23.The Knights posted a 25-20 victory in the second set, but Le Moyne extended the match with a 25-18 win in the third set. Queens registered a 25-21 victory in the fourth set to win the match.
Smith registered team-highs of 12 kills and 12 digs in the losing effort. Junior Elizabeth Cheek (Huntington Beach, Calif./Rosary) contributed 11 kills and nine digs, while Kershner tied her career-high with nine kills. Brainerd recorded 41 assists and nine digs.
Le Moyne (12-10, NE-10 5-5) returns to Northeast-10 action on Wednesday in Albany, N.Y. against Saint Rose at 7:00 p.m.
