VB: DOLPHINS SWEPT IN FINAL DAY OF LE MOYNE
INVITATIONAL
Syracuse, N.Y. - Freshman middle hitter Morgan McDermott
(Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) registered 19 kills and six
blocks, but the Le Moyne College volleyball team dropped a pair of
matches on Sunday in the final day of the Le Moyne College
Invitational at Ted Grant Court. The Dolphins fell in five sets to
Dominican, 3-2, in their first match and were swept by American
International in the invitational's final match, 3-0.
In Le Moyne's opening match, Dominican used a 6-0 spurt early in
the first game en route to a 25-18 victory. Following a 7-7 tie,
N'Jameh Phillip tallied five points off serve as Dominican took
control of the match. The Chargers later extended their lead to
19-11 on a service ace by Courtney Heard, their largest of the
game.
The Dolphins bounced back in the second set with a 25-19 victory to
even the match at one apiece. Le Moyne took advantage of eight
Dominican attack errors and five receiving errors to take the
game.
In the third game, Dominican cruised to a 25-20 victory behind 11
kills and three service aces. The Chargers turned a 15-11 lead into
a 21-11 advantage behind the serve of Jordyn Fuller. Michelle
Fiorvanti capped the game with a kill off a pass from Whitney
Ranger.
Le Moyne knotted the match at two apiece in the fourth game with a
25-21 victory. After falling behind 10-5, the Dolphins went on a
7-1 run to take the lead. Le Moyne's final push came after falling
behind 20-18. Senior libero Lindsey Gleason (Hamburg,
N.Y./Frontier) served for four points before freshman
Bethany Fabian (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier) ended
the game with a kill off a feed from junior Krista Prentice
(Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home).
In the decisive fifth game, the Chargers scored the final seven
points to take the match with a 15-10 victory. Michelle Klimas
served out the game for the Chargers, tallying six points,
including four on service aces.
Senior Elizabeth Cheek (Huntington Beach,
Calif./Rosary) led the Dolphins in the match with 13 kills
and posted seven digs. McDermott landed a career-high-tying 10
kills in the match, while also blocking five attack attempts.
Senior setter Kaylin Brainerd (Liverpool,
N.Y./Liverpool) dished out 30 assists and had 11 digs,
while Gleason recorded 13 digs.
In their second match, the Dolphins fell 28-26 in the opening game
against American International. The Dolphins jumped out to an 8-3
lead before AIC rallied for an 11-9 advantage. The two squads
battled back and forth the remainder of the game. After Le Moyne
got to game point at 24-22, the Yellow Jackets tallied six of the
game's next eight points for the win.
In game two, the Yellow Jackets cruised to a 25-15 victory. AIC
posted leads of 12-5, 17-7 and 23-11 before finishing off the game
on a kill by Keziah Kashouh. Kashouh landed four kills in the game,
while Kambryn Williams registered three.
In the third game, American International battled back from a 14-9
deficit for a 25-22 victory. The Yellow Jackets used a 7-2 run to
even the score at 16 apiece before opening a two-point advantage,
which it would not relinquish. Ellisha Terry posted a game-high six
kills, while Kervelle Redhead dished out 11 assists for AIC. Fabian
led the Dolphins with four kills and seven digs.
McDermott landed nine kills for the Dolphins, with Cheek recording
seven. Defensively, Prentice registered a match-high 13 digs, while
Fabian and Gleason each chipped in eight. Brainerd, Le Moyne's
member of the all-tournament team, dished out 27 assists in the
match, increasing her career total to 2,236, the fourth-best total
in the program's history.
Le Moyne (5-2) returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 19 in
Philadelphia, Pa. for a tri-match against the University of the
Sciences in Philadelphia and Wilmington.
