VB: PRENTICE LANDS 12 KILLS AS DOLPHINS KNOCK OFF SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT, 3-2


Syracuse, N.Y. - Junior outside hitter Krista Prentice (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) landed 12 kills, including five in the fifth set, to propel the Le Moyne College volleyball team to a 3-2 win over Southern Connecticut State on Saturday morning at Ted Grant Court.

The Dolphins opened the match by cruising to a 25-21 win. Behind the serve of freshman outside hitter Allison Hebel (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields), the Dolphins jumped out to an 11-1 lead. After the Dolphins pushed their lead to 16-4, the Owls responded with a 14-6 run of their own to cut their deficit to just four. The two teams split the final six points, capped by kill from freshman Bethany Fabian (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier).

In the second game, the Dolphins posted a 25-18 victory behind four kills from Hebel. After a back-and-forth beginning to the game, Le Moyne scored 16 of the final 25 points of the game to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Prentice and sophomore Kelli Willets (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) each landed three kills, while senior Lindsey Gleason (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) had seven digs.

The Owls evened the match at two apiece with a 25-19 win in the third game and a 25-18 victory in the fourth game. The Owls took control of the third game with five straight points following a 10-10 tie. The Dolphins pulled to within 16-15 on an ace by Morgan McDermott (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee), but Southern Connecticut responded with four consecutive points to pull away. Jenna Tammel and Broghan Miller led the attack for the Owls in the game with five kills apiece.

In the fourth game, the Owls turned a 5-5 tie into a 10-5 lead behind the serve of Marcia Hollingsworth. Le Moyne worked its way back into the game, cutting its deficit to 16-15, but the Owls closed the game on a 9-3 run following a timeout. Megan Lyons recorded five kills in the game for the Owls, while Le Moyne hurt its cause with seven attack errors.

In the deciding fifth game, the Dolphins turned a 4-3 lead into a commanding 13-3 advantage behind the serve of McDermott. The Owls tried to curb the momentum with a pair of timeouts, but to no avail. Prentice and Elizabeth Cheek (Huntington Beach, Calif./Rosary) landed two kills each in the run, while the Owls also committed four errors. After SCSU got a two points on back-to-back blocks, the Dolphins closed the match with a kill and a by Willets.

Cheek finished the match with 14 kills and four digs and McDermott added 10 to join Prentice in double-digits. Senior setter Kaylin Brainerd (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) dished out 25 assists and freshman Katie Plukas (Rochester, N.Y./West Irondequoit) passed out 16 assists. Gleason led Le Moyne defensively by registering a match-high 19 digs.

Le Moyne (10-2, NE-10 2-0), which is off to its best start in over seven years, returns to the court on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Merrimack at 4:00 p.m.
