VB: LE MOYNE DOWNED BY PACE, 3-1, IN NE-10 ROAD
ACTION
Pleasantville, N.Y. - Nora Rugova posted 17 kills to lead three
players in double-digits as Pace University downed the Le Moyne
College volleyball team, 3-1, in Northeast-10 Conference action on
Sunday afternoon at Willcox Gym.
The Setters turned an early 6-4 edge in the first game into a 12-4
lead en route to a 25-20 victory. Susana Verdugo-Del Real served
for five straight points, including a pair of service aces to lead
the run. After the Dolphins narrowed their deficit to just three at
22-19, Pace put the game away with three of the next four points,
capped by a kill by Verdugo-Del Real off a pass from Shea
Hansen.
Le Moyne bounced back in the second set to even the match at one
apiece with a wire-to-wire 25-22 win. After a kill by freshman
outside hitter Morgan McDermott (Camillus, N.Y./West
Genesee) gave the Dolphins a 7-6 lead, classmate
Katie Plukas (Rochester, N.Y./West Irondequoit)
extended the lead to four points. The two squads exchanged points
the remainder of the game until Pace committed a service error to
give Le Moyne the game.
Pace regained control of the match in the third game by cruising
to a 25-18 victory. After falling behind 5-3, the Setters went on
an 11-4 run to take a five point lead. Le Moyne closed to within
16-14, but Pace tallied four straight points and seven of the
game's next eight points before putting the game away.
In the fourth game, the two teams split the first 20 points before
Pace assumed command of the game. The Setters recorded a 7-3 run
followed by a 4-2 streak to push out to a 21-15 lead. After a kill
by sophomore middle hitter Kelli Willets (Apalachin,
N.Y./Vestal) pulled the Dolphins to within 24-20, Victoria
Pompilus closed out the match with a kill off a feed from
Hansen.
McDermott led the Dolphins in kills with 12, the second-highest
total of her career, while also blocking three attack attempts by
the Setters. Outside hitters Krista Prentice (Amherst,
N.Y./Sweet Home) and Elizabeth Cheek (Huntington
Beach, Calif./Rosary) each posted seven kills, while
adding seven and 11 digs respectively. Senior setter Kaylin
Brainerd (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) dished out 26
