VB: CHEEK BREAKS ALL-TIME KILLS RECORD AS DOLPHINS RALLY FOR 3-2
WIN AT FRANKLIN PIERCE
Rindge, N.H. - Senior outside hitter Elizabeth Cheek
(Huntington Beach, Calif./Rosary) landed a
career-high-tying 24 kills to become the program's all-time kills
leader in the Le Moyne College volleyball team's 3-2
come-from-behind win at Franklin Pierce on Sunday afternoon at the
Fieldhouse.
After Franklin Pierce jumped out to a 5-0 lead, Cheek got the
Dolphins on the scoreboard with a kill off a pass from classmate
Kaylin Brainerd (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) to
break the Le Moyne record for career kills. Cheek entered the match
tied atop the career chart with Lindsey Fattey '06 with 1,226. The
Dolphins later rallied from a 10-7 deficit with five straight
points to take lead. After exchanging points through the middle of
the game, the Ravens were able to take their final lead at 17-15.
Le Moyne scored four consecutive points to push ahead and closed
out the game on a 10-4 run for a 25-21 win.
The Ravens rallied from an early deficit in the second set to even
the match at one game apiece with a 25-20 win. Le Moyne held leads
of 6-1, 10-6 and 13-10 before Franklin Pierce made its comeback.
The Ravens tallied seven straight points off the serve of Chelsie
Kohout to take control of the game. After the Dolphins were able to
pull within 20-18, Franklin Pierce capped the game with a 5-2
run.
In the third game, Franklin Pierce took the lead early and rolled
to a 25-22 victory. Trailing 3-1, Kohout served for seven
consecutive points to give the Ravens an 8-3 advantage. Dana
Rowinski later extended Franklin Pierce's lead to a game-high 10
with four straight points off serve. Le Moyne narrowed the Franklin
Pierce lead to 24-22 on a kill by Cheek, but Caitlyn Parnell
slammed down a kill off a pass from Pamela Walker to put the game
away.
After splitting the first 14 points of the fourth game, the
Dolphins went on an 8-3 run en route to a 25-18 win to even the
match at two games each. After Franklin Pierce closed to within
19-17, Le Moyne scored six of the game's final seven points to
close out the game, capped by back-to-back kills from Cheek.
In the decisive fifth set, the Dolphins carried over their momentum
from the fourth game to score the first four points. Le Moyne
extended its lead to 9-2 and 12-3 before registering a 15-4 win to
take the match. The Dolphins landed eight kills in the game without
committing an error, while the Ravens posted six attack errors.
Cheek's 24 kills tie a career high set on Oct. 13, 2007 against
Stonehill and equaled one week later at Merrimack. The three-time
all-conference selection also recorded 23 digs in the match, her
highest total since posting 28 in the match at Merrimack on Oct.
20, 2007. Brainerd, junior Krista Prentice (Amherst,
N.Y./Sweet Home) and freshman Bethany Fabian (Lake
View, N.Y./Frontier) also registered double-doubles on the
afternoon. Brainerd dished out 53 assists and added 13 digs,
Prentice landed 14 kills and had 16 digs, while Fabian added
career-highs of 13 kills and 27 digs. Freshman middle hitter
Morgan McDermott (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) was
the fourth Dolphin to finish in double-digits in kills with 10,
while adding a match-high four blocks. Senior libero
Lindsey Gleason (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier)
contributed 20 digs in the match as the Dolphins posted a
season-best 115 digs.
Le Moyne (16-8, NE-10 8-5), which has won five of its last six
conference matches, close out the regular season with a pair of
home conference matches next weekend. The Dolphins host Bentley on
Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and Stonehill on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
