WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: COURTNEY CORYEA SCORES 22, KIM WAGONER NETS 21 AS LE MOYNE KNOCKS OFF KUTZTOWN 66-51
KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Freshman Courtney Coryea (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) scored 22 points and junior Kim Wagoner (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) netted 21 as Le Moyne knocked off Kutztown 66-51 in the second game of the Kutztown Tournament. The Dolphins (2-0) will meet No. 8 Glenville State on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the tournament championship, while Kutztown (1-1) plays Pitt-Johnstown at 2 p.m. in the consolation game.
Coryea scored 13 of her 22 points in the second half as Le Moyne overcame a two-point halftime deficit. After scoring just one point in the Dolphins' opener, Coryea made 10-of-20 shots from the field, knocked down one 3-pointer and hit a free throw in the win. Wagoner, 4-of-6 from 3-point range in Friday night's win, led Le Moyne in the scoring column with 16 points in Wednesday's season-opening win over Mercyhurst. Sophomore Katie Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) joined Coryea and Wagoner in double figures with 11 points.
The Dolphins forced their hosts into 31 turnovers, while committing just 15 of their own. Le Moyne was outrebounded 34-32, but the Dolphins grabbed 15 rebounds on the offensive end.
Kutztown used a 14-2 run over a six-minute span in the first half to open up a 20-8 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. The Dolphins answered with a 16-4 run of their own to tie the score at 26 on a Coryea layup with 3:08 remaining in the half. Kutztown took a 30-28 lead into the intermission.
Kutztown led by as many as seven in the second half. However, after falling behind 46-39 with 11:54 remaining Le Moyne outscored its hosts 27-5 for the rest of the game to win its second game of the season. Kutztown did not score over the final 5:44 and was held without a field goal over the final 7:08.
Glenville State ran past Pitt-Johnstown 79-42 in the opener. The Lady Pioneers, ranked sixth in the preseason USA Today/WBCA poll, were picked to win the WVIAC in a preseason vote of the league's coaches.
