KIM WAGONER JOINS 1,000 POINT CLUB, LE MOYNE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS AT SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE 69-49 IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Junior guard Kim Wagoner (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) scored a game-high 23 points, including her 1,000th points, but Le Moyne dropped a 69-49 decision at Southern New Hampshire in the regular season finale for both teams. The Dolphins (9-18, 5-17 Northeast-10) will need some help in Tuesday's final regular season games to advance to the Northeast-10 Conference tournament. Southern New Hampshire closes out the season at 6-21 overall and 4-18 in league play.
Wagoner hit 10-of-16 shots from the field, one of four from 3-point range and two of three from the free throw line for her 23 points. She has totaled 1,008 points in three seasons and becomes the program's 13th 1,000-point scorer. Wagoner was Le Moyne's only scorer in double figures for the game.
Sara Tucker scored 17 points, Megan Shay netted 12 and Alyssa Whitney chipped in 10 for Southern New Hampshire. The Penmen carried a 32-23 lead into the intermission and outscored Le Moyne 37-26 in the second half.
After Megan Murphy (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Millbrook) hit the first of two free throws with 10:01 remaining to pull the Dolphins within eight, Southern New Hampshire rattled off 13 straight points to take a 52-31 edge on Alyssa Whitney's layup with 6:12 remaining. The Penmen extended their lead to as many as 23 points in the final six minutes.
Lindsay Ellis (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) scored eight points, Murphy and Vanessa Holden (Suffern, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) tallied six each for Le Moyne. The Dolphins were outrebounded 36-26. Ellis and freshman Courtney Coryea (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) grabbed seven rebounds each.
Twelve teams qualify for the Northeast-10 Conference tournament. Le Moyne, UMass Lowell and Merrimack are tied for 11th place with five wins each. The Dolphins hold tiebreakers over those two teams by virtue of their wins in the only regular season matchups with UMass Lowell and Merrimack. In order for Le Moyne to be eliminated from the playoff race, UMass Lowell would have to beat league regular season champion Southern Connecticut and Merrimack would have to win on the road at Bryant.
Barring the need for a coin flip (the final league tiebreaker), tournament pairings will be announced on Tuesday evening via the Northeast-10 Conference web site.
