WBB: DOLPHINS FALL TO MOLLOY, 69-66, IN DOUBLE
OVERTIME
San Diego, Calif. - Kymira Woodberry scored 30 points, including
eight in the second overtime period, to lead Molloy College to a
69-66 win in double-overtime over the Le Moyne College women's
basketball team on Monday morning on the second day of action of
the San Diego Surf N' Slam Classic at San Diego City College's
Harry West Gym.
Woodberry, who also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, opened
the second overtime period with a jumper in the paint. Le Moyne
answered back with three consecutive points by junior forward
Courtney Coryea (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeast
Clinton) and a jump-shot by junior guard Denise
Scott (Yonkers, N.Y./Lincoln/C.C.R.I.) to open up a
three-point advantage. After Woodberry and Coryea traded baskets,
the Lions scored six of the game's next seven points, including
four by Woodberry, to take the lead for the final time. Coryea had
an opportunity to tie the score with two seconds remaining, but
missed the first of two free throws, before Clarissa Jones finished
the contest's scoring with a pair of foul shots with one second
left.
In the first overtime period, Jones gave the Lions a 55-53 lead
with a jumper 18 seconds into the stanza. Coryea answered back at
the 3:03 mark to knot the score for the fifth time. Woodberry
regained the lead for Molloy with a foul shot, but junior forward
Brittany Davis (Detroit, Mich./Oak Park/Labette College
(Kan.)) scored in the paint with 57 seconds remaining to
put her team ahead 57-56. With 27 seconds left, Woodberry forced
the second overtime period by converting the second of two free
throw attempts.
The Dolphins opened the second half with the first six points to
take a 31-30 lead. Molloy answered back with a 9-3 streak to regain
its five-point advantage. Jones gave the Lions the lead with a
three-pointer and Woodberry followed with four points to cap the
streak. Le Moyne responded with a 7-0 run to pull ahead by a basket
with 8:38 remaining. Senior guard Kathleen Gladstone
(Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) keyed the run by hitting
three foul shots. The two teams traded baskets over the next
seven minutes before Woodberry tied the contest at 53 with 1:26
left in regulation. Each team had an opportunity to take the lead
in the final minute, but could not convert.
Molloy, the only undefeated team in the East region at 8-0, jumped
out to a 19-7 lead through the game's first six and one-half
minutes. Woodberry, a 5-foot, 9-inch junior forward, tallied 10
points in the stretch for the Lions. The Dolphins responded with a
15-5 run of their own to pull within two points with five minutes
remaining in the half. Molloy closed the half with six of the final
eight points to take a 30-25 lead at the half. Second-year graduate
student Jacquelin Precious (Fonthill, Ontario/Governor
Simcoe/St. Peter's College) kept the Dolphins within
striking distance with 12 points in the half.
Coryea, who was named to the Surf N' Slam All-Star Team with
sophomore guard Danielle Felice (Adams, N.Y./South
Jefferson), finished the contest with 14 points and 10
rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Precious
tallied 14 points, one shy of her career high, to join Coryea in
double-figures, while Davis pulled down a career-best 12 rebounds.
Jones recorded 16 points for the Lions, while Tatiana Lopez came
off the bench to score 10.
Le Moyne (6-6) returns to action at home on Saturday, Jan. 3 at
