WBB: CORYEA’S CAREER-HIGH LIFTS DOLPHINS PAST
PENMEN, 54-49
Syracuse, N.Y. – Behind junior Courtney
Coryea’s (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeast Clinton)
career-high 26 points, the Le Moyne College women’s
basketball team knocked off Southern New Hampshire University,
54-49, in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court. Ashara
Carrington scored 14 points off of the bench to lead the
Penmen.
Coryea poured in 19 of her points in the second half. She shot
10-of-15 from the field and finished with five rebounds and three
blocks. Seniors Vanessa Holden (Suffern, N.Y./Immaculate
Heart (N.J.)) and Latoya Anderson (Rochester,
N.Y./Greece Arcadia/Genesee C.C.) each contributed six
points to Le Moyne’s cause. Juniors Brittany Davis
(Detroit, Mich./Oak Park/Labette College (Kan.)) and
Denise Scott (Yonkers, N.Y./Lincoln/C.C. of Rhode
Island) sparked the Dolphins off of the bench, teaming up
for eight points and 11 rebounds.
After Coryea put in the first basket of the game, Southern New
Hampshire went on a 10-2 run over the next five minutes. But Le
Moyne utilized a seven-point run of its own, highlighted by jumpers
from junior Siobhan Shields (Mason, N.H./St. Bernard's
Central Catholic) and senior Kathleen Gladstone
(Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), to take an 11-10 lead with
9:07 remaining in the first half. After the Penmen scored the next
five points of the game, the Dolphins rode a 12-1 run over the
final seven minutes of the first half. Anderson scored all six of
her points in the span to give Le Moyne a 23-16 halftime edge.
The game of scoring runs continued into the second half as
Southern New Hampshire netted the first 16 points of the stanza. In
a seven minute span, the Penmen turned a seven-point deficit to a
nine-point advantage. But after Coryea gave Le Moyne its first
second-half points at the 12:49 mark of the second half, the
Dolphins began to chip away at the lead. Junior Megan
Murphy (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Millbrook) keyed a 9-2 Le
Moyne run over the next four minutes with a three-pointer of her
own.
Southern New Hampshire held a 41-35 lead with 6:44 to play, but Le
Moyne torched the Penmen with a 12-0 run down the stretch. All 12
Le Moyne points in the spurt came from Coryea (6) and Holden (6).
Southern New Hampshire made it a one-possession game twice in the
game’s final two minutes but perfect free-throw shooting from
Scott and Coryea sealed the 54-49 win.
Carrington scored 10 of her team-best 14 points during the
Penmen’s run to open the second half. Julia Houghtaling
pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and Christine Duffy chipped in
with nine points for Southern New Hampshire (7-5, NE-10 2-5).
Le Moyne (7-6, NE-10 4-4) is back in action Tuesday when it
travels to UMass-Lowell for a 5:30 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference
game. The Dolphins return home Jan. 10 to host Stonehill at 1
p.m.
