WBB: UMASS LOWELL EDGES LE MOYNE, 62-57, IN NE-10 ACTION


Lowell, Mass. - Rahshala Valentine scored 17 points, including 13 in the opening half, to lead UMass Lowell to a 62-57 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday night at the Costello Athletic Center.

Senior forward Vanessa Holden (Suffern, N.Y./Immaculate Heart (N.J.)) led Le Moyne with 14 points, while classmate Katie Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic/Holy Family) recorded 12 points. Junior forward Courtney Coryea (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeast Clinton) registered 10 points, five rebounds, three blocks and three assists for the Dolphins. Valentine, a junior guard, led all scorers with her 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-6 from three-point range. Megan Berry hit four three-pointers en route to 16 points, while Jen Valente tallied 14 points.

The River Hawks opened the second half with four of the first six points to take a game-high 16 point lead with 18:29 remaining in the contest. The Dolphins responded with the next eight points and 14 of the game's next 16 points to cut their deficit to four with 13:03 left. Holden tallied six points in the stretch, Dunn added four points and junior Siobhan Shields (Mason, N.H./St. Bernard's Central Catholic) capped the span with a layup.

UMass Lowell answered back with an 11-3 run over the next 6:40 to push its lead back to 12 points. Valente tallied four points in the beginning of the run, while Berry capped the streak with a layup and a three-pointer. After each team scored on its next possession, the Dolphins ran off a 13-2 streak to pull within a point with 45 seconds remaining in the game. Dunn drilled a pair of three-pointers and pulled her team to within 58-57 with a layup to cap the streak. Valentine closed out the game with a jumper and two foul shots to deliver the final score.

In the opening 7:23 of the first half, the two squads traded six-point runs for an 8-8 tie with 12:37 remaining. The River Hawks crept out to an 8-2 lead, before Le Moyne answered back with eight consecutive points. After the Dolphins pushed their lead out to 14-10, the River Hawks rattled off 14 straight points to take a 10 point advantage with just over five minutes remaining. Valentine opened the streak with a three-pointer, Berry followed with three consecutive baskets from three-point range and Valente added a layup.

The Dolphins ran off seven of the next nine points to close within five points with just over two minutes left in the stanza. Graduate student Jacquelin Precious (Fonthill, Ontario/Governor Simcoe/St. Peter's College) opened the run with a layup and junior guard Megan Murphy (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Millbrook) closed the streak with a layup. Valentine responded with eight consecutive points as her team closed the half on an 11-2 run to take a 37-23 lead at the half.

Le Moyne (7-7, NE-10 4-5) returns to action in North Andover, Mass. on Thursday evening against Merrimack at 5:30 p.m.
