WBB: LE MOYNE FALLS SHORT IN NE-10 ACTION AGAINST BENTLEY,
75-65
Syracuse, N.Y. - Junior Courtney Coryea (Mooers Forks,
N.Y./Northeast Clinton) scored 21 points and senior
Vanessa Holden (Suffern, N.Y./Immaculate
Heart (N.J.)) netted 20 but the Le Moyne College women's
basketball team fell to Bentley University, 75-65, in Northeast-10
Conference action at Ted Grant Court. Kristy McLean scored a
career-high 26 points for the Falcons and Kim Brennan added 18.
Coryea and Holden finished with seven rebounds. Senior
Katie Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic/Holy
Family) poured in nine points on a trio of three-pointers.
Senior Kathleen Gladstone (Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh
Jesuit) handed out seven assists to follow up Saturday's
eight-assist performance against No. 4 Stonehill. She scored three
points on a first-half three pointer and pulled down four
boards.
The Dolphins held a one-point edge with just under five minutes to
play but the Falcons erupted for 18 points down the stretch to earn
the win. After starting the second half behind by four, Le Moyne
tied the game within 40 seconds with a lay-up from Coryea and a
jumper from graduate student Jacquelin Precious (Fonthill,
Ontario/Governor Simcoe/St. Peter's College). Le Moyne led
by as many as six on two occasions in the second half but Bentley
made the most of its trips to the free-throw line, knocking down
all 14 attempts with under five minutes to play. The Falcons
converted 23-of-24 free-throws for the game (95.8 percent).
Le Moyne scored the first seven points of the game behind jumpers
from Holden and Coryea and a trifecta from Dunn. Bentley regrouped
after a 30-second timeout and rode a 15-4 run to the 12:14 mark of
the first half to gain a four-point advantage. The Dolphins pulled
back ahead, at 20-17, thanks to a 9-2 spurt over the next three
minutes. Junior Brittany Davis (Detroit, Mich./Oak
Park/Labette College (Kan.)) and senior Latoya
Anderson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia/Genesee C.C.)
netted baskets during the stretch and Gladstone punctuated it with
a three-pointer. But the Falcons took a 37-33 lead into the
halftime break behind seven points from Kelly Barrett and five from
McLean.
In addition to her career-high 26 points, McLean finished a
game-best 11 rebounds and five steals. Barrett narrowly missed a
double-double, finishing with nine points and nine boards. Collette
Josey came off the bench to net six points, grab nine rebounds and
collect six blocks for Bentley (12-6, NE-10 8-3).
Le Moyne (8-9, NE-10 5-7) hits the road for a pair of Northeast-10
Conference weekend games. The Dolphins travel to St. Anselm
Saturday and to Assumption Jan. 24. The team's next home game is
Jan. 28 against American International at 5:30 p.m.
