WBB: LE MOYNE DOWNS SAINT ANSELM, 65-52, IN NE-10 ROAD
ACTION
Manchester, N.H. - Senior forward Vanessa Holden (Suffern,
N.Y./Immaculate Heart (N.J.)) scored 12 points and grabbed
12 rebounds to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to
a 65-52 victory over Saint Anselm on Saturday afternoon at
Stoutenburgh Gym.
Holden, who finished in double-figures for the third consecutive
game, recorded her fourth double-double of the season. Senior
Latoya Anderson (Rochester, N.Y.//Genesee C.C.)
came off the bench to record career-highs of nine points and five
rebounds in 18 minutes of action. Senior guard Kathleen
Gladstone (Cleveland, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) registered six
points, six assists and five rebounds. Justine Lyons scored a
game-high 19 points, including 15 at the foul line, off the bench
for the Hawks, while Haley Poupore contributed 17 points as a
reserve. Courtney May finished as the third Saint Anselm player in
double-figures with 10 points and a game-best 17 rebounds.
After trading baskets over the opening five minutes of the second
half, the Hawks used a 14-3 run over a six-minute span to trim
their deficit to just five points with 8:24 remaining in the
contest. Poupore and May tallied five points in the streak, while
Lyons added four points.
The two squads four-point runs over the next three minutes before
the Dolphins pushed their lead back out to 10 points on a jumper by
junior Siobhan Shields (Mason, N.H./St. Bernard's Central
Catholic) and a three-pointer by senior Katie Dunn
(Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic/Holy Family). Gladstone
hit four free throws and Holden added a pair over the final minute
to close out the contest.
The Dolphins, who won for the first time in 10 games at
Stoutenburgh Gym under head coach Jeanne Murphy, jumped out to a
12-4 lead over the opening eight minutes of the contest.
Second-year graduate student Jacquelin Precious (Fonthill,
Ontario/Governor Simcoe/Saint Peter's College) opened the
scoring with a three-pointer and Holden tallied the final five to
cap the streak.
After the Hawks pulled to within 16-10 with 8:47 remaining, the
Dolphins used a 15-6 run to expand their lead to 15 points with
just over four minutes left in the stanza. Anderson recorded two
straight conventional three-point plays to tally the first six
points of the streak for the Dolphins. Junior forward
Courtney Coryea (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeast
Clinton) registered a pair of baskets around a
three-pointer from sophomore guard Ashley McFarlan
(Kennesaw, Ga./St. John the Baptist) to cap the run. The
Hawks narrowed their deficit to 11 points with 3:16 remaining,
before the Dolphins closed out the half with a 7-2 span to take a
38-22 lead into the intermission.
Le Moyne (9-9, NE-10 6-7) returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 24
in Worcester, Mass. against Assumption at 1:30 p.m. The Dolphins
defeated the 24th-ranked Greyhounds, 78-71, on Nov. 30 at Ted Grant
Court.
