LE MOYNE'S WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COACH PROMOTED TO ASSOCIATE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR / SENIOR WOMEN'S ADMINISTRATOR

SYRACUSE, NY - Director of Athletics Matt Bassett announced today that Jeanne Murphy has accepted the administrative position of Associate Athletic Director / Senior Women's Administrator (SWA) and will begin her new role on July 1, 2009. In moving to the Athletic Department Senior Leadership Team, Murphy leaves the sidelines as the Women's Basketball Head Coach, a post she has held for the last nine seasons.

In assuming this full-time position of Associate Director and SWA, a role Muprhy has held in a part-time capacity since 2003, she will provide leadership and oversight to an array of critical programming initiatives that will involve the entire department. Murphy will take immediate responsibility for the department's student services area including supervision of the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), Academic Success Program, Student-Athlete Leadership Program ('LEAP') and mentoring programs, and serve as the department's liaison to the campus Counseling Center and Residence Life Office. Additionally Murphy will provide direct support and supervision, including budget oversight and the evaluation of coaching staff personnel, for various men's and women's programs.

"I am excited about the opportunity to be part of our new athletic administration, and look forward to working with the coaches and student-athletes in supporting them any way I can," said Murphy.  "While the choice to leave the sideline is not an easy one, I cherish the opportunity to make a positive impact in the experience student-athletes have here at Le Moyne."

"I couldn't be more pleased with Jeanne's decision to accept this opportunity", said Bassett. "She will have an instant and profound impact on the department in her new administrative role. The toughest part of this new assignment may well be the phone calls that she will be making to her players and the alumni to let them know of her decision. Le Moyne basketball will miss Coach Murphy and her leadership, but now our entire student-athlete population will benefit from her passion, personal integrity, and commitment to the intercollegiate athletic experience." According to Bassett, Murphy will play a significant role in the search for her replacement as head basketball coach.

As a former player and captain of the women’ s team, Murphy guided the Dolphins to their only NCAA appearance in 2001-02 and has qualified for Northeast-10 Conference tournament play in eight of her nine seasons. Murphy, a 1995 graduate of Le Moyne, is one of only three head coaches in the 33 year history of the women's basketball program.
Additionally, Murphy will continue to serve as the Director of the 2009 slate of summer girl’s basketball camps being held at Le Moyne College.
