WLAX: DOLPHINS OPEN SEASON SUNDAY AT SYRACUSE

Syracuse, N.Y. - On Sunday, February 15th, the Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team will travel to the Carrier Dome to take on the #2-ranked Syracuse Orange at noon. The Orange is just one of three preseason ranked teams the Dolphins will take on this year. In addition to Syracuse, Le Moyne will travel to #16 Cornell on Wednesday, March 11 and #14 New Hampshire on Saturday, April 11.

Le Moyne returns 14 players from last year's team, including four starters; senior Maura Kenville (Syracuse, N.Y./CBA) and sophomores Rebekah Elmer (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee), Katlin Walker (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan) and Nerissa Barzee (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville). The Dolphins have seven newcomers for the 2009 season, highlighted by Under Armour High School All-American Kelly Fucillo (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee), who is replacing four-year starter Samantha Falcone in goal.

Le Moyne lost four of its top five scorers from 2008, led by Whitney Vecchio, who tallied 52 goals and 28 assists for a total of 80 points on the season and is currently the all-time record leader in points and assists. Elmer, who finished second on the team with 25 goals and fifth with 28 points, will be joined by Kenville and fellow sophomore Mia Valletta (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) on the starting midfield line. The starting attack line will include senior McKenzie Gray (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville), who sat out the 2008 season as a redshirt, sophomore Michelle Phillips (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine Endwell) and freshman Stephanie Dussing (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden). Starting on the defense for the Dolphins will be junior Kari DeWick (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan) and sophomores Walker, who paced the team with 31 ground balls, and Barzee, who is making the switch from midfield where she finished the season with 13 goals and four assists. High School All-American Fucillo will be the starting goalkeeper.

Lauren O'Connor is returning as the head coach of the Dolphins for her seventh season. Along the sidelines with O'Connor is third-year assistant coach Megan O'Connell and first-year assistant Leah Mazella ‘08, who started at defense for the Dolphins last season. O'Connor returns this season holding the highest winning percentage in Le Moyne women's lacrosse history with a 77-32 (.706) record. In 2006, O'Connor led the team to 15 wins and was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. In 2007, O'Connor led the Dolphins to 16 wins, the most in school history. For the second year in a row, Le Moyne went undefeated in conference play bringing the conference winning streak up to 18 consecutive games, where it would eventually end due to Le Moyne becoming an Independent. In its first season as an Independent in 2008, Le Moyne finished with a 12-5 record. The Dolphins will open at home on Friday, February 20 against Niagara.
