WLAX: LE MOYNE OUTLASTS SACRED HEART, 11-9, FOR SECOND STRAIGHT WIN

Syracuse, N.Y. – Behind 17 saves from freshman goalkeeper Kelly Fucillo (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee), the Le Moyne College women’s lacrosse team notched its second straight win, 11-9, over Sacred Heart on Saturday at Henninger High School. Sophomore Rebekah Elmer (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) led Le Moyne’s scoring charge with three goals.

The Dolphins sprinted to a 3-0 lead in the game’s first three minutes behind a score from senior Maura Kenville (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and a pair of goals from Elmer. Defensive play dominated a 12-minute stretch in the first half, until Sacred Heart notched back-to-back goals 20 seconds apart to trim its deficit to one. Le Moyne responded with a quick strike of its own, as junior Jackie Lundblad (Marietta, N.Y./Marcellus) followed Elmer’s third goal of the game to push the Dolphin lead to 5-2 by the 9:37 mark.

Again, the Pioneers responded with a two-goal spurt before goals from senior McKenzie Gray (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) and sophomore Nerissa Barzee (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) gave Le Moyne a 7-4 lead to take into halftime. Barzee carried the ball from one end of the field to the other to notch her eighth goal of the season on a solid individual effort.

Sophomore Mia Valletta (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) netted a pair of second-half scores, including a tally 11 seconds into the half, to secure an 8-4 Dolphin advantage. But Sacred Heart struck for five of the game’s next six goals to knot the game at nine goals apiece with 12:45 to play. Lundblad scored what proved to be the game-winner just over a minute later. Sophomore Michelle Phillips (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine Endwell) added an insurance goal to round out the game’s scoring at the 4:41 mark.

Fucillo proved vital to Le Moyne’s second-half push, stopping 10 shots over the game’s final 20 minutes. She collected a pair of crucial saves with under 40 seconds to play, including one on a Pioneer free-position opportunity.

The Dolphins hit the road for a pair of road games next week, at Cornell on Wednesday and at La Salle on Saturday, before returning home March 22 to host Vermont at 2 p.m.
