WLAX: LE MOYNE FALLS TO CORNELL 11-5 ON THE ROAD.
ITHACA, NY - Led by a strong defense, the Cornell Big Red handed
the Le Moyne women's lacrosse team a 11-5 defeat on Wednesday
afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. Cornell improved to 4-0 while
the Dolphins fell to 2-4 on the year.
Senior Jessica Wiegand led the offensive charge for the Big Red
with three goals, two on free position shots. Cornell jumped out to
a 5-0 lead in the first half before the Dolphins registered their
first goal of the day. Michelle Phillips (Johnson
City, NY / Maine Endwell) converted on a transition goal
from Rebekah Elmer (Syracuse, NY / West Genesee)
to cut into the Cornell lead. Nerissa Barzee
(Baldwinsville, NY / Baldwinsville) chipped in her lone
goal of the afternoon 40 second later to pull the Dolphins within
three at 5-2. Wiegand helped the Big Red push the lead back
to a four goal advantage before the half with her second goal of
the day with 11 second remaining.
Cornell would convert on Le Moyne turnovers in the second half to
record five unanswered goals to open the second half. Down
11-2, the Dolphins rallied for three straight goals, two by
midfielder Mia Valletta (Niskayuna, NY /
Niskayuna) to close the gap to 11-5 before the final
horn.
Freshman goalie Kelly Fucillo (Camillus, NY / West
Genesee) shined in goal for the Dolphins recording 14
saves.
