WLAX: VALLETTA & BARZEE RECORD HAT TRICKS AS OREGON
TOPS LE MOYNE 17-11
SYRACUSE, NY – Oregon’s Ilsa van den Burg and Jana
Drummond recorded five points each to lead the Ducks past Le Moyne
17-11 on Saturday at the Niland Athletic Complex. Despite hat
tricks from Mia Valetta (Niskayuna, NY /
Niskayuna) and Nerissa Barzee (Baldwinsville, NY /
Baldwinsville), the Dolphins fall to 4-6 on the season.
Oregon improves to 8-3 overall.
Defensemen Katlin Walker (Penn Yan, NY / Penn Yan)
got the Dolphins on the board early with her first goal on the
season off a free position shot less than two minutes into the
game. Rebekah Elmer (Syracuse, NY / West Genesee)
added the first of her two goals on the day before the Ducks 
responded with five unanswered goals, three by van den Berg, to
take a 5-2 lead midway through the first period. Elmer’s
second goal via a free position attempt cut the Oregon lead to 5-3,
but the Ducks closed the first half on a 4-1 run to take a 9-4 lead
into the intermission.
The Dolphins charged out of halftime to score the three of the
games first four goals to pull within three 10-7 on an unassisted
goal by Valetta. Following an Oregon goal by Catherine Davidson,
Maura Kenville (Syracuse, NY / CBA) and Valetta
added back-to-back goals to pull the Dolphins within striking
distance at 11-9.
The Ducks pulled way down the stretch, outscoring the Dolphins 5-1
over the final nine minutes of regulation. Oregon capitalized on
gaining position in crucial draw controls, a statistic dominated by
the ‘Phins throughout most of the game (19-11).
In goal, freshman Kelly Fucillo (Camillus, NY / West
Genesee) recorded 11 saves on the afternoon. OU’s
Anna Poponyak registered nine in goal for the Ducks.
Le Moyne looks to bounce back on Sunday, March 29th as they host
Villanova at 1:00 PM at the Niland Athletic Complex.
