WLAX: VILLANOVA SURGES PAST LE MOYNE LATE, 13-12

Syracuse, N.Y. - Villanova University scored three goals over the game's final five minutes to sneak past the Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team, 13-12, in non-conference action at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Katlin Walker (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan) netted three goals to lead the Dolphins.

Walker's three-goal performance gave her five scores for the weekend. Classmate Rebekah Elmer (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) finished with a pair of goals to run her team-best season total to 24. Senior McKenzie Gray (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) and sophomore Leah Lazarz (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) also recorded two goals each while sophomores Nerissa Barzee (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) and Mia Valletta (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) and senior Maura Kenville (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) tallied once for Le Moyne. Elmer, Gray, Kenville and Valletta all dished out assists in the loss.

Walker scored her final goal of the game with 8:04 to play to give the Dolphins a 12-10 advantage. After the Wildcats cut the lead in half on a Katie Stone score with 5:19 remaining, Le Moyne was issued two yellow cards in an 80-second span to give Villanova a two-man advantage. The Wildcats cashed in on the opportunity and netted the equalizer on an Erica Rybinski free-position shot with 3:10 to play. Sixteen seconds later, Taryn McKenna fired in the game-winning goal. She finished with three goals on the afternoon to lead the Wildcats.

Villanova scored the first two goals of the game but Le Moyne led a majority of the way, until the Wildcats' surge in the final minutes. The contest featured four ties and five lead changes, with the Dolphins extending a three-goal lead twice. Elmer's first goal pushed Le Moyne's lead to 6-3 with 7:07 to play in the first half. But Rybinski and Taylor Lucy each scored over the final 6:34 of the half to trim Le Moyne's halftime advantage to one.

Out of the halftime break, Rachel Lasda netted a pair of goals for Villanova to give the Wildcats a one-goal lead. But the Dolphins erupted for four straight goals over a four-minute stretch, punctuated by back-to-back scores from Lazarz, to seize a 10-7 lead. After the two teams traded a goal, Villanova outscored Le Moyne 5-1 down the stretch to produce the game's final score.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelly Fucillo (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) turned away 18 shots between the pipes for the Dolphins.

Le Moyne (4-7) is back in action next Sunday, April 5, when it hosts Bucknell University at 1 p.m.
