WLAX: DOLPHINS OUTLAST BUCKNELL IN OT, 10-9, BEHIND
BARZEE’S FIVE GOALS
Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women’s lacrosse
team snapped a three-game skid Sunday afternoon, coming from behind
in overtime to knock off Bucknell University, 10-9, in
non-conference action at Onondaga Community College. Sophomore
Nerissa Barzee (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville)
netted a career-high five goals, including the game-winner, to lead
the Dolphins.
Trailing by two goals with under 10 minutes to play in regulation,
Le Moyne stormed back thanks to a score from sophomore
Rebekah Elmer (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) at the
9:39 mark and Barzee’s fourth goal with 5:02 to play. The
Bison pushed ahead by a goal, 9-8, with 58 seconds left in the
first overtime session when Carol Donahue scored on an empty net.
The Dolphins responded with two goals in the second three-minute
session. Junior Jackie Lundblad (Marietta,
N.Y./Marcellus) put in the equalizer at the 1:52 mark
before Barzee sent home the deciding tally with just over a minute
to play. Le Moyne won the subsequent draw control and ran out the
final 62 seconds of overtime.
The game featured six ties but only three lead changes. After
sophomores Katlin Walker (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan)
and Lauren Crary (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit)
wrapped a pair of goals around a Chelsea Peters score to give the
Dolphins a 2-1 lead, the Bison erupted for three consecutive scores
to take a 4-2 lead with 6:44 remaining in the first half. Le Moyne
scored three of the first half’s final four goals to tie the
score at 5-5 by the halftime break. Walker netted her second goal
and Barzee answered a Julia Braun tally with her first and second
scores of the game.
Bucknell pushed in front just about five minutes into the second
half before Barzee evened the score with her third goal of the
game. Donohue scored back-to-back goals for the Bison over the next
nine minutes to give Bucknell an 8-6 lead with 14 minutes to play.
But Le Moyne staged its rally by scoring four of the game’s
final five goals.
Freshman netminder Kelly Fucillo (Camillus, N.Y./West
Genesee) stopped a variety of shots from point-blank range
and finished with eight saves in goal for Le Moyne.
Barzee’s five goals were the most by a Dolphin this season.
Walker’s pair of goals gives her seven over the past three
games and Crary’s was her first tally of the season.
Elmer’s goal pushed her team lead to 25 on the season while
senior McKenzie Gray (Baldwinsville,
N.Y./Baldwinsville) picked up a pair of assists to add to
her team-best season total of 22. Barzee and classmate Leah
Lazarz (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) contributed one assist
each for Le Moyne.
With the win over the Bison (8-4), the Dolphins (5-7) topped a team
with a winning record for the first time this season. Le Moyne
plays the final game of a six-game homestand when they host
Binghamton University on Tuesday.
