WLAX: UMBC TRIPS UP DOLPHINS, 17-7
Baltimore, Md. – Sophomores Michelle Phillips
(Johnson City, N.Y./Maine Endwell) and Rebekah
Elmer (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) each scored a pair of
goals for the Le Moyne College women’s lacrosse team but the
Dolphins fell to UMBC, 17-7, in non-conference action at UMBC
Stadium Saturday afternoon. Ten different players scored for the
Retrievers, with Ashley Stodter and Amanda Pappas turning in
three-goal performances.
Elmer pulled the Dolphins within a goal ten minutes into the game,
at 2-1, on an assist from Phillips. But UMBC cruised to a 9-2
halftime lead thanks to a five-goal streak between the 18:35 mark
and the 3:15 mark of the first half. Sophomore midfielder
Nerissa Barzee (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville)
put an end to UMBC’s scoring run with a tally at the 2:49
mark before the Retrievers netted the final two goals of the
half.
The Dolphins scored first to open the second half when Elmer sent
in an unassisted strike just over two minutes in. Elmer, who leads
the team with 30 goals and 39 points on the season, has scored in
all but two of Le Moyne’s games this season. After UMBC
struck for a pair of quick goals, the Dolphins rattled off three
straight scores to pull within five at 11-6. Phillips scored
back-to-back goals, first on a free position shot and then on an
unassisted effort, to give her twelve markers on the campaign.
Freshman Stephanie Dussing (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop
Ludden) followed the goals from Phillips with her third
score of the season. The Retrievers extended their lead to six
goals, at 12-6, before sophomore Mia Valletta (Niskayuna,
N.Y./Niskayuna) capped Le Moyne’s scoring with a
goal at the 12:32 mark. The midfielder found the back of the net
for the fourth consecutive game and now owns 26 goals on the
season. Over the final ten minutes, UMBC accounted for five
straight goals to produce the 17-7 final score.
Freshman netminder Kelly Fucillo (Camillus, N.Y./West
Genesee) collected 11 saves between the pipes for the
Dolphins, including eight in the second half.
Le Moyne (5-10) will stay in Maryland for Sunday afternoon’s
game. The Dolphins face Cincinnati in Brooklandville at St.
Paul’s School for Girls at noon Sunday.
