LE MOYNE WOMEN’S SOCCER SELECTED NINTH IN
NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE PRESEASON POLL
South Easton, Mass. – The Le Moyne College women’s
soccer team has been selected to finish ninth in the Northeast-10
Conference standings, as voted on by the league’s 15 head
coaches. Franklin Pierce University, the national runner-up one
year ago, was picked to win the league title after receiving eight
of the possible 15 first-place votes for 218 total points, as
announced by the conference on Wednesday, Aug. 20.
Defending conference regular season and tournament champion Saint
Rose garnered seven first-place votes, but fell one point shy of
the Ravens to finish second with 217 points. Merrimack picked up
190 points to grab the third spot in the preseason poll, while
UMass Lowell collected 158 points to claim fourth. Saint Anselm
rounds out the top-five with 141 points.
Conference newcomer New Haven tallied 128 points to start off
spots six through ten. Southern Connecticut State and Stonehill
followed with 125 and 118 points, respectively, to finish seventh
and eighth. The Dolphins, who recorded a 9-8-1 record last year for
their first winning record since 2000, garnered 111 points to place
ninth in the poll. Southern New Hampshire followed by edging past
Assumption for tenth place with 95 points, while the Greyhounds
garnered 84. Bentley (66), Saint Michael’s (65), American
International (46) and Pace (28) were selected to round out the
standings.
Le Moyne returns 25 letterwinners, including nine starters, from
last year’s squad. The Le Moyne offense is led by
all-conference selections Megan O’Shea and Christina
Harrison. O’Shea, a third-team forward last season, led the
team with nine goals and three assists for 21 points. Harrison, a
first-team selection in 2006, tallied five goals and a team-high
six assists for 16 points as a sophomore. Le Moyne’s defense
is led by senior goalkeeper Amanda Abbatiello and classmate Justine
Ravas. Abbatiello, who ranks fifth on the career goals against
average (1.60) chart and tied for eighth in career saves (200),
started 14 games between the pipes last season. Abbatiello recorded
69 saves, two shutouts and posted a 1.47 goals against average.
Ravas, a starter in 14 of 18 games played last year, anchored a
defense which allowed only 24 goals in 18 games, the fewest number
of goals allowed in a season in the program’s history.
The Dolphins, currently in the midst of a 10-day preseason
training trip to Holland, Belgium, and Germany, open the regular
season on Friday, Aug. 28 against Wilmington at 5 p.m. as part of
American International’s Tournament. The Northeast-10
tournament quarterfinals will begin on Sunday, Nov. 2. The
semifinals will take place on Thursday, Nov. 6, with the finals
being played on Sunday, Nov. 9.
