WSOC: DOLPHINS FALL TO SAINT ANSELM, 3-1, IN NE-10
ACTION
Manchester, N.H. - Midfielder Teresa Vercollone scored two goals
to lead Saint Anselm to a 3-1 victory over the Le Moyne College
women's soccer team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday
at Melucci Field.
The Hawks opened up the scoring at the 8:10 mark with Vercollone's
first goal of the game, and the only tally of the half, coming off
a give-and-go play with Keara Dolan. The Hawks were able to get off
five shots over the remaining 35 minutes of the half but were
unable to increase their lead.
After only two shots on goal in the first half, the Dolphins
battled back to tie the game off a goal by senior forward
Megan O'Shea (East Syracuse, N.Y./East
Syracuse-Minoa) at the 56:15 mark in the second half.
Sophomore midfielder Rachel Farneti
(Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) placed a corner kick
into the box, allowing senior back Alex Dwyer
(Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) to get it past the
goalie for O'Shea to finish off. O'Shea's fifth goal of the season
tied the game at 1-1, but the Hawks were able to come right back
and score just over three minutes later. Vercollone received a pass
from Jennifer Pearl and scored her second goal of the game past
sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Stevens
(Camillus, N.Y./West
Genesee).
The Hawks secured the win in the 81st minute of play with a goal
from Hillary Sanacore. A foul called on Le Moyne allowed the
Hawks' Jennifer McEvoy to send a free kick into Sanacore, who was
able to fight past the defense to take a 3-1 lead.
Saint Anselm out-shot the Dolphins 16-10 in the contest, which
included a 9-2 advantage in the first half. Despite the loss,
Stevens posted seven saves for the Dolphins, while Jacqueline
Cooney made six saves for the Hawks.
Le Moyne (4-2-2, NE-10 1-2-2) returns to action on Tuesday, September 22nd at home against Adelphi at 4:00 p.m.
