WSOC: MORANO LEADS DOLPHINS PAST BENTLEY, 2-1, WITH TWO
GOALS
Syracuse, N.Y. - Freshman forward Christie Morano
(Highland, N.Y./Highland) scored two goals to lead the Le
Moyne College women's soccer team to a 2-1 Northeast-10 Conference
victory over Bentley on Saturday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland
Athletic Complex.
Following a scoreless first half, the Dolphins broke through in
the opening minutes of the second stanza. Senior forward
Megan O'Shea (East Syracuse, N.Y./East
Syracuse-Minoa) crossed a ball from the right corner into
the penalty box, where Morano collected the ball and scored from
six yards out into the left corner.
Just over 16 minutes later, Bentley evened the score at one
apiece. Following a long pass down the middle of the field, Le
Moyne sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Stevens (Camillus,
N.Y./West Genesee) knocked the ball away from a pair of
Bentley attackers. Julie Pomponi collected the ball in the right
corner of the penalty box and found Cheryl Boyd, who scored into an
open n
et from just outside the goal box. The held an 18-1 advantage in
shots in the second half, but could not score over the final 20
minutes to force overtime. Morano had a breakaway in the 89th
minute, but Falcon goalkeeper Kara Smith came up with a sliding
save.
Morano tallied her team-high eighth goal of the season just 2:10
into overtime. After getting possession of the ball at the top of
the penalty box off a pass from senior Christina Harrison
(Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt), Morano sidestepped
Smith and fired a shot inside the left post from 12 yards out.
Stevens turned aside three shots in between the pipes for the
Dolphins, while Smith registered five saves. After being out-shot
8-5 in the opening half, Le Moyne ended the contest with a 25-9
advantage in shots, while also posting a 14-6 edge in corner
kicks.
Le Moyne (6-2-2, NE-10 3-2-2), which has gone to
overtime in three of five home contests this season (3-0-2 at
home), returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at Assumption at
3:30 p.m.
