WSOC: DOLPHINS DOWN SAINT MICHAEL'S, 4-3, IN OVERTIME ON MORANO'S
FINAL-MINUTE GOAL
Syracuse, N.Y. - Freshman forward Christie Morano
(Highland, N.Y./Highland) scored in the final minute of
the second overtime period to lead Le Moyne College to a 4-3
victory over Saint Michael's in Northeast-10 Conference women's
soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland
Athletic Complex.
Senior forward Christina Harrison (Jamesville,
N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) opened the scoring in the 14th
minute of the contest. Harrison collected a deflection at the top
of the penalty box, dribbled right and scored into the goal from 12
yards out. Just over three minutes later, the Purple Knights evened
the score off a defensive miscue by the Dolphins. Following an
errant pass, Teal Bryan scored from 14 yards for her second tally
of the season.
The Dolphins regained the lead with 12:48 left in the first half on
an unassisted goal by Harrison. Harrison blasted a shot from just
inside the left corner of the penalty box over goalkeeper Ashleigh
Adams into the upper right corner of the goal.
Harrison, the fourth all-time leading scorer in the program's
history with 79 points on 32 goals and 15 assists, doubled Le
Moyne's lead by scoring off a header at the 63:07 mark. Following a
corner kick by sophomore midfielder Rachel Farneti
(Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus), junior back Jill
Tolman (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) served a ball
from just outside the penalty box into the goal box where Harrison
beat Adams for her third tally of the contest.
The Purple Knights bounced back with a pair of goals seven minutes
apart to knot the score at three apiece. Kristin Hagenbarth
narrowed Le Moyne's lead to 3-2 in the 68th minute with a header
from just three yards after a cross into the box by Laura Ostrout.
Ostrout evened the score 7:07 later with a shot from 10 yards off a
pass from Bryan. Hagenbarth had an attempt to win the game with
7:22 remaining from inside the goal box, but sophomore goalkeeper
Melissa Stevens (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee)
pushed the ball off the crossbar to keep the score tied.
The two squads were scoreless over the first overtime stanza to
force a second 10-minute period. Off a Saint Michael's corner kick
in the ninth minute of the second period, Katie Murphy headed the
ball towards the Le Moyne goal, but Stevens snared the ball before
it could cross all the way over the goal line. The Dolphins raced
up field to set up Morano's game-winner. On a failed clear attempt
by the Purple Knights, senior back Courtney Paddock
(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) intercepted the ball and
fed it back up the middle of the field. Morano collected the ball,
dribbled to her left and scored over reserve goalkeeper Brittany
Cocozza with just 53 second remaining in the contest. Morano's
tally increased her season point total to 20, the most by a Dolphin
freshman in 17 years.
Le Moyne (7-3-2, NE-10 4-3-2), which played its fourth overtime
game of the season at home, travels to New Haven on Tuesday, Oct. 6
at 4:00 p.m.
