WSOC: DOLPHINS UPEND SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT, 2-1, ON MORANO'S THIRD
OVERTIME GOAL OF THE SEASON
Syracuse, N.Y. - Freshmen Jennifer Fabian (Clay,
N.Y./Baldwinsville) and Christie Morano (Highland,
N.Y./Highland) each scored a goal to rally the Le Moyne
College women's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over Southern
Connecticut State in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up on
Wednesday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex.
The two teams traded scoring opportunities in the first half, but
neither team could get on the scoreboard to go into intermission
deadlocked at zero. The Owls held a 12-10 advantage in shots in the
opening half, while each team registered seven shots on goal.
Senior forward Christina Harrison (Jamesville,
N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) had a breakaway attempt in the
ninth minute, but Southern Connecticut goalkeeper Katie DiDio made
a sliding save. Five minutes later, the Owls countered with a pair
of shots on goal of their own, but sophomore midfielder
Rachel Farneti (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) was
able to stop the ball each time before it could cross the goal
line. Just over four minutes later, Morano had a shot from the left
wing, but DiDio pushed the ball over the crossbar.
Senior forward Danielle MacMurray put the Owls ahead in the 59th
minute following a scramble for the ball. MacMurray collected the
ball at the top of the penalty box, dribbled left and slotted the
ball into the lower right corner of the goal from seven yards
away.
The Dolphins battled back to tie the score at the 72:06 mark.
Following a free kick along the end line, freshman midfielder
Gabriele Ariola (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) came up with
the ball at the top of the penalty box. After taking a dribble to
her left, she fed Fabian, who fired a shot from 12 yards out into
the right side of the goal. Le Moyne held a 6-2 advantage in shots
over the final 17 minutes of regulation, but could not get the ball
past DiDio.
After playing a scoreless first overtime period, Morano tallied her
third game-winning goal of the season just 2:23 into the second
overtime period. After a takeaway in the defensive half of the
field, Fabian came up with the ball and sent it down the sideline
to a streaking Morano. Morano outran her defender and shot the ball
into the upper right corner of the goal for her team-high 10th
marker of the season, the most by a Le Moyne freshman since
1992.
The Dolphins out-shot their guests 26-22, while also holding an 8-5
edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Stevens
(Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) made seven saves for the
Dolphins, while DiDio turned away 10 Le Moyne shots.
Le Moyne (9-4-2, NE-10 6-4-2), which improves to 4-0-2 in overtime
games this year and 5-0-2 at home, returns to action on Saturday at
12:00 p.m. against Merrimack.
