Leadership and Service…

When a race needed to be run at Le Moyne in the early 1960s, he ran.  When an organization needs a job to be done today, he will do it.  There are people you can depend on and Robert Herzog is one of them.

In an era when athletes were expected to compete in multiple events at every meet and travel was catch-as-catch-can chauffeured by the coach, a young man from Buffalo was a mainstay of Le Moyne’s Track and Cross-Country squads.

He was leading scorer on the cross-country team from 1961 through 1963 and captain of the 1963-64 team.  He recorded four first-place finishes and set the course record at Rochester Institute of Technology.  He finished second at the 1962 MECCA Championships and first in the 1963 State Catholic Collegiate Meet.  He was leading scorer on the track team from 1963 through 1965; Most Valuable Player in 1964 and Captain of the 1964-65 squad.  He won the individual 1962 Collegiate Track Conference two-mile and anchored Le Moyne’s winning mile relay team at the CTC Championships.

His accomplishments in the classroom were equally impressive.  He was elected President of the Biology Club and went on to earn his D.D.S. at the University at Buffalo, a Captain’s rank in the U.S. Air Force and entered private dental practice in 1971.

A professional respected by his peers, he is a clinical associate professor of dentistry at the University at Buffalo and has served with distinction in a variety of capacities at the local, regional and national level of the American Dental Association.

His abilities are shown by the range of community organizations that look to him for leadership: president of the Board of Trustees at Mount Saint Mary Academy; vice president of the Board of Managers at Hampton Hill Condominium, Parish Council member and recipient of the Jaycee’s Distinguished Service Award.

Athletic challenges remain a significant part of his life.  He has run the Boston Marathon four times, garnered five medals at the National Dental Olympics, and coached cross-country, indoor and outdoor track and soccer at Mount Saint Mary Academy.  His 2002 outdoor track and field squad at The Mount was undefeated league champion and he was selected Coach of the Year in 2002.

Le Moyne College seeks to prepare students for leadership and service in their personal and professional lives to promote a just society.

Because the college can point with pride both to his exploits as a harrier in Green and Gold and to his record of leadership and service as a graduate,

Robert J. Herzog ’65 is a member of the Le Moyne College Athletic Hall of Fame.
