Syracuse, N.Y. – One of the things that separates Le Moyne's Athletics Department from all the rest is its shared culture. The programming for that shared culture, which has been titled "Inside the L" since its inception a decade ago, is undergoing a facelift.
The most noticeable change is a new name and a new look.
"The Le Moyne Way," replaces the "Inside the L" moniker, with a fresh new logo to complement its new name.
The work to create an even more deeply mission-driven athletics department began in 2011. Input was gathered from all stakeholders (administrators, coaches, faculty, student-athletes, parents and alumni) to guide our quest to become a Nationally Premier Division II Athletic Department in the Jesuit Tradition. The resulting "Inside the L" touchstone represents a deeply intentional, shared, and sustainable culture built on a 500-year-old Catholic Jesuit values.
The new iteration of the annual programing will include practical life-skills applications, such as the Social Media Training that was expertly administered to all student-athletes by 5.0 Communications earlier this month. New programming will also feature an outside speaker series focused on topics identified by student-athletes as major areas of concern.
"One of the things that attracted me to Le Moyne College was its 'Inside the L' program," said Le Moyne Director of Athletics
Bob Beretta. "The more I studied the department's shared culture, the I more I believed it should serve as a model for athletic departments of faith-based institutions across the country.
"Based on feedback we had received from our student-athletes and other key stakeholders, we felt the need to adjust the annual programming. We formed a committee headed by former women's basketball head coach Gina Castelli this summer and comprised of student-athletes, coaches and staff members to delve into the programming. We asked the group to provide feedback for ways to align the programming with current societal shifts and to better meet the needs of our student-athletes. The changes we have implemented are a direct result of the committee's recommendations."
One program assessment per academic year will now be conducted at a time of year selected by the head coach of each team to best serve their specific student-athletes. Additional programing will be developed and led by Le Moyne's student-athletes, another new element this year.
"We were not interested in altering the bedrock values of the touchstone," Beretta added. "We wanted to add elements most important to our student-athletes and continue to prepare them for life after Le Moyne. We feel the programing transcends Athletics, which is why we adjusted the name. We want to foster a sense of inclusivity, and we have already partnered with College leadership to deliver quality life-skills training for all Le Moyne students."
"The Le Moyne Way" is a whole-department approach to whole-person development. Not a program, a culture; our shared way. Something Le Moyne does with its student-athletes. Collectively, the Department of Athletics pursues excellence with integrity in the classroom, in competition, and in life. Intentional efforts to put the school's core values in action creates a unique formation and unique community that results in measurable educational and athletic success and whole-person development.
