Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College Play of the Week, presented by Sodexo, for October 31 occurred during the men's soccer team's 3-2 Northeast-10 Conference Championships Quarterfinals victory over the No. 2-seeded Southern Connecticut State University Owls in New Haven on Saturday.
The match was sent to overtime after SCSU came up with a goal in the 89
th minute to tie the game at 2-2. Le Moyne reclaimed the lead at the end of the first 10-minute overtime period after
Jack Goodrich (Kelsall, England/King's School Chester) earned a penalty kick and scored it himself in the 99
th minute.
During the second overtime period, the Owls were fighting to keep their season alive and pushing hard to find the equalizer. Le Moyne graduate goalkeeper
Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) came up with four of his eight total saves during the second 10-minute period.
With just over seven minutes remaining in overtime number two, SCSU's Yannick Hilpert made a run into the left side of Le Moyne's 18-yard box and an Owl teammate played him a ball into space. Hilpert accepted the pass and took a shot with his left foot about five yards away from the goal line, to the left of the six-yard box.
Hilpert's shot was aimed towards the right side of the net, and Mahr kicked out his left foot to deflect the shot away from his goal. The ball eventually went out of bounds for a corner kick, and Le Moyne held their 3-2 lead for the final seven minutes of the match to record the postseason victory and advance to the conference tournament semifinals.
Mahr's kick save on Hilpert's shot has been named the Le Moyne College Play of the Week, presented by Sodexo.
The No. 7-seeded Le Moyne College men's soccer team will compete in the Semifinals of the 2022 Northeast-10 Conference Championships on Wednesday, November 2. Their opponent will be the No. 6 seed in the tournament, the Adelphi University Panthers. The two teams met on Ted Grant Field during the regular season, and the Dolphins came away with a 3-0 victory.
