MEN'S BASKETBALL: PHIL SCHOFF
SCORES 20, GRABS 11 REBOUNDS AS LE MOYNE RUNS PAST
CAZENOVIA 112-56
SYRACUSE, N.Y.
– Junior Phil Schoff (Little Falls,
N.Y./Little Falls) scored a career-high 20 points and
grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Le Moyne to a 112-56 win over Cazenovia
in a non-conference men's basketball game at Grant Court. The
Dolphins (3-5) snap a three-game losing streak, while Cazenovia
drops to 3-6 on the season.
Schoff's 20 points off the bench paced a season-high six Le
Moyne players in double figures. Freshman Damani Corbin
(Brooklyn, N.Y./Frederick Douglass) and junior
Matt Cooper (Fulton, N.Y./Fulton) scored 14 points
each, sophomore Jason Holmes (Mamaroneck,
N.Y./Mamaroneck) netted 11, while senior Corey Smith (Gouverneur, N.Y./Gouverneur) and freshman
Stefan Horbanczuk (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) scored 10
points.
The Dolphins pounced on their visitors early, opening up a 66-30
lead in the opening half. Cooper and Holmes scored four points each
as Le Moyne jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first 1:33. The
Dolphins opened up a 31-point lead on a Smith 3-pointer at the
midway point of the half. After taking a 33-point edge into the
intermission, Le Moyne pushed its advantage to 50 points (91-41) on
a 3-pointer by Horbanczuk with 12:41 remaining in the second half.
The lead never dipped below 48 points the rest of the way.
Senior forward Sedrick Hawkins (Syracuse,
N.Y./Henninger) led NCAA Division III, NEAC member
Cazenovia with 15 points. The Wildcats managed just 16 field goals
in 68 attempts from the floor (23.5%) and turned the ball over 23
times. Cazenovia scored 21 of its 56 points from the charity
stripe. Freshman Stephen Harris (Watervliet,
N.Y./Watervliet) scored 13 points, but was limited to a
3-for-15 effort from 3-point range.
Le Moyne's 112 points are the most since a 115-63 win over
Oswego in the second game of the 1994-95 season and the first time
over 100 since a 101-87 win over LIU-Southampton in the 1999-2000
season.
All 12 Dolphins landed in the scoring column. Junior guard
Dan Wright (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) hit two
jumpers and freshman Matt Lostumbo (Fairport,
N.Y./Fairport) made his only shot from the field for their
first collegiate points.
Le Moyne returns to action Dec. 29 at 7:30 p.m. against Green
Mountain in the Le Moyne Holiday Tournament. Clarkson and Baruch
will tip off in the opening game of the tournament at 5:30 p.m. The
consolation and championship will be contested on Dec. 30 at 5:30
and 7:30 p.m.
