MEN'S BASKETBALL: LE MOYNE CLINCHES SPOT IN
NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT WITH A 75-46 WIN OVER
SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT
NEW HAVEN, Conn. –
Senior Corey Smith (Gouverneur, N.Y./Gouverneur)
scored a career-high 24 points to lead Le Moyne to a 75-46
win over Southern Connecticut in the Northeast-10 Conference
men's basketball regular season finale for both teams. The
Dolphins (12-15, 7-15 Northeast-10 Conference) clinch the
12th and final playoff spot in the 15-team Northeast-10
Conference, while Southern Connecticut (5-22, 2-20 Northeast-10)
concludes its season.
Le Moyne jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never trailed in the
game. Senior co-captain Sid Pond
(Watertown,
N.Y./Watertown) joined Smith in double figures with 14
points. Smith hit 6-of-8 from 3-point range en route to his second
consecutive game of 20 or more points. Pond grabbed seven rebounds
to equal junior Matt Cooper
(Fulton, N.Y./Fulton)
for team-high honors in that category.
Le Moyne took a 44-29 lead into intermission and outscored their
hosts 31-17 in the second half. The Dolphins outrebounded their
hosts 33-31 and outshot the Owls 58% (29-for-50) to 28.6%
(16-for-56). Le Moyne hit 9-of-14 (64.3%) from 3-point range,
including 7-of-9 in the opening half.
After opening the season 5-10 overall and 1-10 in league play,
the Dolphins closed out the regular season 7-5 overall and 6-5 in
league play. Le Moyne will travel to the No. 5 seed on Saturday for
a 2 p.m. game. The league completes its schedule on Tuesday night.
Bryant, Saint Anselm, Saint Rose or UMass Lowell could be the team
that hosts Le Moyne in the first round.
