CHARLESTON, S.C. – Mark Egleton's pinch-hit double in the bottom of the seventh lited The Citadel to an 8-5 win over Le Moyne in the Dolphins season opener at the Sandlapper Real Estate Shootout.
On its first day on the diamond this year, Le Moyne outhit its hosts 12-8. Andy Parrino (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport), Keith Connors (Jamesport, N.Y./Commack) and Jamie Rose (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell) had two hits each for Le Moyne. Parrino and Connors each smacked two-run home runs in the opener.
After the hosts hopped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, Connors tied the score with a two-run home run to right. The Bulldogs answered with two runs in the bottom of the third and one in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.
The Dolphins touched up reliever Justin Smith for three runs to tie the game at five in the top of the seventh. Rose led off the inning with a double to right field. Parrino drove him home with a home run to right on an 0-2 pitch. Connors walked, Michael Affronti (Dix Hills, N.Y./Commack) singled him to third and Brian Hansen (Endicott, N.Y./Chenango Valley) knocked in the tying run.
With none out and the bases loaded in the seventh, Egleton came off the bench to double home two runs off Le Moyne reliever A.J. Lindsey (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal). Le Moyne was unable to mount a rally off Citadel closer Link Saunders. He struck out the side in the eighth and two more in the ninth for his fourth save.
Le Moyne meets Towson tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. That game was moved back one hour due to pending inclement weather in Charleston.
