FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Senior catcher Tom Arpino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) singled home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Fairfield to a 4-3 win over Le Moyne in the third game of their MAAC baseball series at Alumni Diamond.
Freshman Dan Gallagher (Allendale, N.J./Bergen Catholic) closed out the Dolphins with two and two-thirds scoreless innings. The Stags take the first MAAC series of the season from the Dolphins after splitting yesterday's doubleheader with a 4-3 win in 12 innings of the opener and a 6-0 loss in the second game.
Senior John Safe (Ansonia, Conn. /Ansonia) was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Sophomore Albia Demimonde (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) was 1-for-3 with a two run single in the bottom of the second inning, giving Fairfield a 2-0 lead.
Freshman Doug Villella picked up the win for the Stags, despite giving up 10 hits in six and one-third innings. Gallagher came on in the seventh with one on and one out, and got the next eight outs for the Stags.
Le Moyne's three runs came on a pair of home runs. Junior Ben Gaal (Manlius, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) cut the deficit to 2-1 with a solo home run in the fourth. Senior Keith Connors (Jamesport, N.Y./Commack), who went 2-for-4 on the afternoon, delivered the Dolphins a 3-2 lead with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth.
Senior Michael Falasca (Sicklerville, N.J./Gloucester) allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on five hits. Falasca (0-3) struck out eight and walked just one.
