SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Sophomore Emma Murphy (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) drove in four runs in the nightcap to avenge a game one loss to American International College as Le Moyne won game two of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader 10-2 in six innings at the Niland Athletic Complex. The Yellow Jackets (12-22, 9-7 NE-10) topped the Dolphins in game one 5-4 to earn the split.
After Le Moyne jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Lindsay Spaziani (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) solo home run in the bottom of the first inning, AIC plated a run on a wild pitch to knot the score at one. The Yellow Jackets took a 3-1 lead on a Kellie Brown two run home run to right field in the top of the fourth.
The Dolphins cut the lead to 3-2 on a run by Jennifer Farrelly (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kristen DesLauriers (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) doubled home Kortney Meadows (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) in the fifth inning to tie the score at 3-3. AIC took the lead for good with two unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning. Meadows singled home Ashley Anderson (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) to cut the lead to 5-4 but Megan Nickerson got the next two batters out to spoil the Dolphins' rally.Â
Junior Martha Senko (Pine City, N.Y./Elmira Free Academy) struck out nine batters while yielding only four hits in the complete game effort for the Dolphins to drop her record to 5-3.
In game two, Le Moyne scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. Sophomore Kayla Donnelly singled home freshman Ashley Deegan to cut the lead to three and Deanna Zanetti walked on bases loaded to score Tara Gorenc in the top of the fourth making the score 4-2.
Le Moyne tacked on six runs on nine hits in the final three innings. Murphy drove in four runs and Anderson drove in three throughout the six innings of play. Junior Melissa Quimby (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) singled twice in the final two innings to score freshman Caitlin O'Neill (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) while Spaziani, who went 3-4, forced home freshman Samantha Petersen (Clinton, Utah/Viewmont) on a bases loaded walk to secure a 10-2 win in six innings.
Le Moyne sophomore Sarah Reed (DeWitt, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) struck out four and allowed just seven hits for her ninth win of the season.
The Dolphins host Franklin Pierce on Saturday at noon. Saturday's game will be televised live on Time Warner Sports Channel 26 throughout Central and Northern New York.
