NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - Junior Ben Gaal (Manlius, N.Y./CBA) homered and drove in three runs in the opener and freshman Matt Nandin (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) knocked in the go-ahead runs in the nightcap as Le Moyne swept a MAAC baseball doubleheader against Niagara at Sal Maglie Stadium. The Dolphins (29-12, 14-5 MAAC) won the opener 11-4 and the second game 5-4 in nine innings. Le Moyne has won seven consecutive league games.
Junior righty Bobby Blevins (Briarcliff, N.Y./Briarcliff) improved to 8-2 with a win in the opener. He struck out six and allowed four runs.
Gaal singled in one run in the second inning and connected for a two-run home run in the fifth inning. He leads Le Moyne with 10 home runs this season. Michael Affronti (Dix Hills, N.Y./Commack) had three hits, while Stephen Crawford (Webster, N.Y./Finger Lakes CC), Gaal, Phil St. Amant (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) and Brian Hansen (Endicott, N.Y./Chenango Valley) had two hits each in the opener.
In the nightcap, reliever Ryan Woods (Jacksonville, Fla./Englewood) pitched three and 1/3 innings for the win in the extra-inning second game. He relieved T.J. Sheridan (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) who received a no-decision after winning his first six league starts of the season. A.J. Lindsey (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) recorded the final out for his sixth save of the season.
Nandin's go-ahead single in the top of the ninth capped a two-out rally. Jamie Rose (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell) and St. Amant produced back-to-back singles and Keith Connors (Jamesport, N.Y./Commack) walked to load the bases. Nandin singled up the middle to put Le Moyne ahead 5-3.
With league-leading Rider's (15-5) split with Manhattan on Saturday, the Dolphins move one-half game behind the Broncs for the top spot. The Purple Eagles (22-22, 12-8 MAAC) and Dolphins will square off on Sunday in one nine-inning game at noon.
