September 2006
Dear Basketball Alumni and Friends,
I hope everyone had a great summer and that you are looking
forward to the start of basketball practice next month. The campus
is alive, classes are in full swing, our crew is back and preseason
workouts are going well!
Last year's team finished strong by making the Northeast-10
post-season for the fifth
consecutive season. We also won 7 out of our last 12 regular
season games. With our top two scorers, 6'7" Power Forward,
Matt Cooper (Fulton, NY/Fulton) and 6'4" Guard,
Jason Holmes (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) returning
and a total of nine upperclassmen on the roster, the Dolphin's
expectations are very high. We have four new faces on the
roster this season and one new assistant coach. Two junior college
transfers from the west coast, 6'1" Point Guard, Mark Covin
(Cover City, CA/College of the Sequoias) and 6'4" Forward,
Jonathan Joshua (Inglewood, CA/Porterville) will
bring experience while providing and immediate impact in key
positions on the court. Also, two promising freshmen, 6'0" Point
Guard, Durett Miles (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady)
and 6'7" Power Forward, Laurence Ekperigan (Cortlandt
Manor/Walter Panas) will join 6'8" red-shirt Center,
Mike McDonough (Ogdensburg, NY/Ogdensburg Free
Academy) to complete our bright freshmen class. We are
also pleased to have Assistant Coach, Clive
Bentick join our staff after playing and serving a two
year coaching stint at Canisius College. Clive's a graduate from a
Jesuit College and his recent experience as a player will be a
tremendous asset to our program.
As always, our players' academic and personal growth continue to
be the focus of everything we do as a program. By challenging our
players to perform in the classroom, we are confident that their
performance will also transfer onto the hardwood as well. An
example of this is senior team captain, 6'6" Forward, Phil Schoff (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls). Phil is a
History/Education major and will balance student teaching along
with his role on the team this season. I am proud to say that he
and his teammates posted a 3.0 GPA for last year.
We have a few upcoming events before we get into our basketball
schedule. First, it will be great to see everyone before we begin
games on October 20-21 for a Le Moyne Men's Basketball Alumni
Weekend. We encourage everyone to attend the 23rd Annual Gold Wave
Hall of Fame Dinner on Friday night, October 20. On Saturday the
21, we hope you will enjoy the day in Syracuse, watch our open
practice that begins at 4:30 and participate in our Alumni Game at
7:00pm. Please mark your calendars today and help generate some
excitement about the upcoming season.
It was great to see many of you who golfed in the Gold Wave Open
last month. The Gold Wave continues to be there to help our program
by providing financial support necessary for continued growth and
success. For all the years of tremendous loyalty and generosity,
THANK YOU!
Keep in mind that contributions to the "Gold Wave" or direct
checks payable to Le Moyne College Men's Basketball count as annual
fund gifts, and you may receive a tax deduction. Please stay
in touch with our office and keep us informed of any new happenings
in your life! Address/email changes and employment information
