BUFFALO, NY. - The Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team, the 2006 MAAC league champion, took their first step in defending their title by defeating Canisius College 9-6 in their conference opener played at the Demske Sports Complex on the Golden Griffs' campus.
Le Moyne (6-4, 1-0) was led by Amanda Keegan (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) who tallied three goals and one assist to pace the offensive attack. Kylie Rosette (Watertown, N.Y/General Brown) and Whitney Vecchio (Watertown, N.Y. / General Brown) contributed with two goals and one assist each. Beth Sierotnik (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) and Leah Mazella (Syracuse, N.Y. /Henninger) rounded out the scoring by adding one goal apiece.
Le Moyne and Canisius traded goals throughout the first half with the Dolphins taking a 4-3 lead in to halftime on Kylie Rosette's second goal of the game with 13:33 remaining in the first half. The Dolphins jumped out to a 5-3 advantage on a goal by Amanda Keegan 1:36 into the second half. Canisius would string together a pair of goals midway through the second half, but the Le Moyne offense responded with two goals from Whitney Vecchio and Beth Sierotnik to propel the Dolphins to victory. Samantha Falcone (Syracuse, N.Y. /West Genesee) had 10 saves in goal for the Dolphins.
Le Moyne looks to build on their three game winning streak hosting Niagara on Sunday, April 1st at 11:00 a.m. on the Henninger High School campus.
