SYRACUSE, NY. - The Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team capped a perfect 7-0 record in the MAAC to win the league title on Sunday with a 16-9 victory over Fairfield. This marks the second time in as many years the Dolphins have finished the conference season undefeated. The win improves the Dolphins to 13-4 on the season, while the loss drops the Stags to 8-9, 5-2 in the league.
Le Moyne was led by their three seniors who played their final home game. Amanda Keegan (Marcellus, NY / Marcellus) led all scorers with four goals and three assist. Lauren Byrne (Syracuse, N.Y. /Bishop Luden) collected two goals to and Kristen Malecki (Baldwinsville, N.Y. /Baldwinsville) collected three ground balls and anchored the Le Moyne defense.
Le Moyne jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a Whitney Vecchio (Watertown, N.Y. /General Brown) on a Keegan assist. Fairfield countered by scoring the next three goals to take a 3-2 advantage. Each team traded goals when the Dolphins exploded for four goals in a span of 41 seconds. Le Moyne took at 9-5 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Le Moyne scored the first two goals as Keegan poured in her third goal of the game on an assist from Lisa McCarthy (Syracuse, N.Y. /West Genesee). Le Moyne would outscore the Stags 4-1 over the final 11:02 to secure the victory.
Eight Dolphins recorded goals on the day. Vecchio added three goals and two assists, while Kylie Rosette's (Watertown, N.Y. /General Brown) chipped in with three goals of her own.
Le Moyne will begin preparation for the MAAC Tournament that will be held on April 27th and 29th on the Iona College campus. The Dolphins will earn a one-seed for their undefeated regular season.
