SOFTBALL CAPS REGULAR SEASON WITH DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF BENTLEY

Compliments of Bentley College Sports Information

WALTHAM, Mass. - Senior Sarah Reed (DeWitt, N.Y.) accounted for six runs in the opener and pitched a one-hitter in the nightcap as Le Moyne College, ranked 22nd nationally in Division II swept Bentley College, 11-4 and 4-0, in Northeast-10 Conference softball Thursday afternoon at Bentley.

Bentley, which needed to win at least one in order to claim a spot in this weekend's conference playoffs, finished the season at 20-24 overall (one shy of the school record for victories) and 13-15 NE-10. Le Moyne ran its winning streak to 19 and reached the 40-win plateau for the season, improving to 40-8 overall and 27-1 NE-10.

In the opener, Le Moyne freshman Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y.) ran her season record to 12-0 in an 11-strikeout performance. She allowed five hits, three of which came in Bentley's three-run second that tied the game at 3-3.

After the Falcons had evened the score, Le Moyne wasted no time regaining control, scoring four times in the top of the third. Reed accounted for the first two with a double to left, and later scored on a single by junior third baseman Caitlin O'Neil (Pittsford, N.Y.).

Reed, one of four Dolphins to have two hits, drove in three runs and also scored three. Le Moyne also received three RBI from senior first baseman Emma Murphy (East Syracuse, N.Y.).

Junior center fielder Dina Ferriero (Tewksbury/Tewksbury HS) had three hits for Bentley, boosting her career total to exactly 100.  However, one Falcon who didn't have a hit was freshman Christine D'Amico (Shrewsbury/Shrewsbury HS), whose school record hitting streak ended at 21 games.

In game two, Reed (13-2) lost her no-hit bid with one out in the seventh, on a single up the middle by Bentley junior shortstop Alex Hitchcock (Abington/Abington HS). Other than that, she allowed only two base runners (a hit batter, and one reached on an error).

Reed also helped herself to an early lead, scoring in the top of the first on a double to center by O'Neill. Le Moyne picked up two runs in the third, one on a sac fly by Reed, and added an insurance run in the fourth inning.
