VOLLEYBALL CLINCHES SIXTH SEED IN NE-10 TOURNAMENT WITH 3-1 WIN OVER STONEHILL ON SENIOR DAY

Syracuse, N.Y. - Senior outside hitter Elizabeth Cheek (Huntington Beach, Calif./Rosary) led three players with double-digit kills as the Le Moyne College volleyball team defeated Stonehill, 3-1, in the regular season finale for both teams on Sunday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.

The Dolphins opened the match with a 25-21 win in the first game. Behind the serve of Krista Prentice (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home), the Dolphins turned a 3-3 tie into a four point lead. After Le Moyne pushed out to a 13-10 lead, the Skyhawks tallied six consecutive points off the serve of Michelle Thornhill. Le Moyne countered with six of the next seven points to regain the lead. After Stonehill got within 22-21, the Dolphins tallied the final three points, capped by a kill from freshman Morgan McDermott (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee).

Stonehill responded in the second game with a 25-21 victory to even the match at one game apiece. After the two teams split the first 16 points of the game, the Skyhawks recorded four straight points to take a lead they would not relinquish. Stonehill extended its lead to a game-high seven points at 21-14 before closing out the game on a Le Moyne attack error. Laura Noonan posted six kills in the game for the Skyhawks, while Erin Johnson recorded five.

Le Moyne regained control of the match with a 25-16 win in the third game. The Dolphins used a 6-1 run early in the game to take a 10-5 lead. The Skyhawks closed to within 15-13 on a Le Moyne attack error, but the Dolphins answered back with four straight points and eight of the game's next nine points for a 23-14 advantage. The two teams traded points to close out the game.

The Dolphins closed out the match with a 25-17 win in the fourth game. The two squads played to an 8-8 early in the game before Le Moyne scored three consecutive points to pull away. Leading 18-16, sophomore Kelli Willets (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) landed a pair of kills around a block with Cheek to extend the Le Moyne lead to 21-16. Following a Stonehill kill, the Dolphins scored the final four points to seal the match, led by a pair of kills by Cheek.

Cheek finished the match with 14 kills and 15 digs for her seventh double-double of the season and her third straight. Fabian posted 10 kills and 11 digs, while Prentice totaled 10 and 13 digs to join Cheek in double-figures. Senior libero Lindsey Gleason (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) registered a team-high 17 digs in her final career home match. Classmate Kaylin Brainerd (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) dished out a match-high 46 assists on the afternoon, while adding three kills. Brainerd, Cheek and Gleason were honored prior to the match for their commitment to the program.

Le Moyne (17-9, NE-10 9-6), which finished in a five-way tie for fifth place in the conference standings, earned the sixth seed in next weekend's conference championship by going 3-1 against the four teams it was tied with.
