SOFTBALL BOUNCE BACK WITH SWEEP OF AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL, 7-3, 5-1

Springfield, Mass. - Senior Jennifer Farrelly (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) went 3-for-4 with two home runs in game one and junior left fielder Bailey Phillips (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Arcadia) picked up three hits in four at-bats in game two to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a doubleheader sweep of American International on Thursday afternoon at Groff Field. The Dolphins, who bounced back from being swept by Southern Connecticut on Wednesday, topped the Yellow Jackets 7-3 in game one and 5-1 in the nightcap.

The Dolphins opened the scoring in game one with a pair of runs on two hits in the second inning. Freshman designated player Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) singled through the right side with two outs to keep the inning alive. Classmate Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) followed with her second home run of her career to give the Dolphins the lead.

American International narrowed its deficit to one with a run on two hits and an error in the bottom of the fourth inning. Deanna Zanetti led off the frame with a single and moved to second on the play on an error. Following a groundout to push Zanetti to third, Tara DeMontier doubled to left center to knock in Zanetti.

Le Moyne added to its lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning on two hits. Freshman first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) walked to open the inning and moved to second on a sac bunt by Phillips. Two batters later, junior second baseman Kelly Schweikert (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) blasted a two-run home run to give the Dolphins a 4-1 lead. Farrelly followed with her sixth homer of the campaign to tie Schweikert for the team lead.

The Yellow Jackets got one run back in the bottom of the frame on three hits. Katie Elie doubled to center field with one and advanced to third two batters later on a single by Michelle Franey. Zanetti followed with a single to third base to knock in Elie.

The Dolphins increased their lead to 7-2 with a pair of solo home runs in the final two innings. Cashel led off the sixth inning with her first career home run and Farrelly drilled her second homer of the contest with one out in the seventh inning.

The Yellow Jackets scratched across one run in the seventh inning on three hits with two outs to deliver the final score. Franey started the rally with a single up the middle and Zanetti followed with a single through the left side. Kellie Brown then singled up the middle to drive in Franey.

Farrelly picked up the win in the pitcher's circle to improve to 11-4 on the season. Farrelly struck out five batters, while scattering nine hits in her 12th complete-game performance of the season. Cashel registered two hits in the contest to join Farrelly in posting multiple hits for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins broke through in the nightcap with four runs in the top of the third inning on four hits and two errors. Le Moyne loaded the bases on singles by Ford and Phillips, while junior center fielder Danielle VanGorder (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) reached on an error. Schweikert was then hit by a pitch to force in Ford. Phillips then scored on a passed ball as VanGorder and Schweikert also each moved up a base. Farrelly followed by connecting on a 2-1 for a single through the left side to knock in VanGorder. Cashel capped the inning's scoring with a double to right center to plate Schweikert, while Farrelly was thrown out at home trying to score from first.

Le Moyne added a single run in the fifth inning to take a five run advantage. Freshman third baseman Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) walked with one out and was followed by singles from sophomore catcher Kim Baker (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) and freshman pinch-hitter Amanda Mosich (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) to load the bases. After a pop out, VanGorder singled to right field to drive in pinch-runner Kate Waltman (Alplaus, N.Y./Niskayuna).

AIC scored once in the sixth inning, but could not cut any further into its deficit. Franey doubled to center field with one away. Two batters later, Brown recorded a double of her own to knock in Franey.

Sophomore Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) struck out eight batters to pick up her 12th victory of the season. VanGorder recorded two hits in the contest to go along with Phillips' game-high three hits.

Le Moyne (25-9, NE-10 13-3), which is receiving votes in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll and ranked first in the most recent NCAA East Region rankings, returns to action on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. against Northeast-10 Conference-foe Franklin Pierce for the beginning of a three-day homestand.
