Syracuse, N.Y. - Senior Jennifer Farrelly (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) went 5-for-5 with three home runs and eight runs batted in to lead 25th-ranked Le Moyne College to a doubleheader sweep of Merrimack in Northeast-10 Conference softball action. The Dolphins won the opener, 7-0, and defeated the Warriors, 7-2 in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Dolphins plated four runs on three hits and a Merrimack error. Junior center fielder Danielle VanGorder (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) reached on an error with one out. Freshman shortstop Barbara Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) followed with a single to center field to move VanGorder to third. After Shea stole second and a strikeout was recorded, Farrelly doubled to left center to plate VanGorder and Shea. Senior third baseman Caitlin O'Neill (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) then doubled to left field to knock in Farrelly. Following consecutive walks to sophomore catcher Kim Baker (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) and freshman designated player Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) to load the bases, freshman first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) drew a walk to force in O'Neill.
The Dolphins tacked on single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to cap their scoring. Farrelly blasted a solo home run to left center in the third inning and smack a solo shot to left in the fifth. In the sixth inning, Edmondson singled down the left field line and Ford singled up the middle with one out. Following an infield fly, VanGorder singled through the right side to drive in Edmondson.
Merrimack got on the board with a pair of runs in the fifth frame. Jill Gagnon led off the inning with a single. Following a strike out, Casey Conetta doubled to left field to score Gagnon all the way from first. Kara Melillo followed with a double to straight away center to knock in Conetta.
Farrelly struck out three batters over seven innings, while yielding just two runs on six hits, to record her fifth win in her last six decisions. Farrelly drove in four runs and scored three times in her three-hit performance, while O'Neill registered two hits.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins jumped on the Warriors with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. VanGorder doubled and Schweikert singled around a pop out to open the inning. Following a groundout, Farrelly connected on a 2-2 pitch for a three-run homer to center field.
The Dolphins tacked on two runs in each of the third and sixth innings. VanGorder led off the third with a single to left and moved to second on a sac bunt by Ford. Schweikert followed with a double to right center to plate VanGorder. After a fly out, Farrelly singled to right field to knock in Schweikert, but was thrown out trying to advance to second.
In the sixth, Schweikert doubled to left field to open the inning. After a groundout and a walk to Farrelly, O'Neill singled up the middle to score Schweikert. Two batters later, Baker singled through the right side to drive in Farrelly from third.
Sophomore right-hander Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) struck out 10 batters to register her team-best sixth shutout of the season, while limiting the Warriors to just four hits.
Le Moyne (19-7, NE-10 7-1) returns to action on Wednesday at The College of Saint Rose at 5:00 p.m. The doubleheader will be played at the RGSL Complex in Rotterdam, N.Y.
