Old Westbury, N.Y. - Sophomore Jeff Tardiff (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) struck out eight batters in a complete-game performance to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 10-2 win over New York Tech on Thursday afternoon at President's Field.
The Dolphins got on the board in the first inning on a solo home run to right center by senior catcher Chris Haynes (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and added five runs on five hits and three errors in the second inning. Sophomore third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) tripled to center to lead off the second and scored one batter later on a sacrifice fly by junior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham). Junior first baseman Rich Brown (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) followed with a single to third base and advanced to second on a throwing error. After a single by senior second baseman Chris Murphy (Laurel Hollows, N.Y./St. Dominic's), freshman designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) reached on a throwing error by the pitcher and advanced to second, allowing Murphy to move to third and Brown to score. Senior shortstop Matt Nandin (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) then singled to third base to drive in Murphy and advanced to second on a throwing error. Following a strikeout, Haynes doubled down the left field line to plate Ciraco and Nandin.
Following two scoreless innings, the Dolphins tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Marra and Paino doubled to lead off the frame. Brown followed with a single up the middle to drive in the duo.
The Bears broke through with two runs of their own in the eighth inning. George Carroll followed a Greg Gilroy single with homer to right field to cut the Le Moyne lead to 8-2. The Dolphins got the two runs back in the top of the ninth inning. After a pair of outs to start the inning, Murphy singled through the left side to keep the inning alive. Freshman pinch-hitter Dan Sisto (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) connected on a 3-2 pitch with a two-run blast to left field.
Tardiff posted his second straight victory with his first career complete game and career-best eight strikeouts. Marra registered a game-best three hits and two runs scored, while Haynes, Brown and Murphy each connected on a pair of hits.
