SOFTBALL TOPS CALDWELL 2-1 IN NCAA TOURNAMENT EAST REGIONAL

SYRACUSE, NY – The top-seeded and 12th ranked Le Moyne Dolphins defeated Caldwell 2-1 on the second day of the NCAA Division II Softball East Regional, advancing to Sunday's championship game. Le Moyne (42-10) was led by NE-10 Player of the Year Jennifer Farrelly's (Latham, NY / Shaker) three-inning save and the eventual game winning RBI.

Despite allowing six hits in four innings of work, sophomore Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, NY / Holy Trinity) earned her 21st win of the season.

Le Moyne broke through in the third inning as Caitlin O'Neill (Pittsford, NY / Our Lady of Mercy) opened the frame with a double down the left field line. Pinch running for O'Neill, Kate Waltman (Alplaus, NY / Niskayuna) advanced to third on a ground ball to the right side. Freshman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, NY / Sandy Creek) pushed across Le Moyne's first run as she legged out an infield single to score Waltman.

The Dolphins added one more run in the fourth inning when junior Kelly Schweikert (Rochester, NY / Spencerport) reached on a Caldwell error. After moving over on a fielder's choice and wild pitch, Farrelly drove a sacrifice fly to the centerfield warning track to easily score Schweikert from third.

On in relief, the Cougars scrapped for one run in the fifth inning. With runners on first and second, Kelly Ryan scored from second on a Dolphin defensive miscue on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Gina Capardi. Farrelly recorded the final two outs of the inning to hold the 2-1 advantage.

Caldwell's best opportunity to tie the game came in the bottom of the seventh. The Cougars loaded the bases before Farrelly struck out Marisa Tamez swinging to deliver the win for the Dolphins. With her 10th save of her career, Farrelly sets the Le Moyne record for saves in a career.

With the win, the Dolphins advance to the championship round of the East Regional at noon on Sunday. Le Moyne will face Caldwell once more after the Cougars defeated Dowling 7-6 in 11 innings of an elimination game.
