BASEBALL FALLS TO UIC, 8-4, IN FINAL GAME OF OPENING WEEKEND

Cary, N.C. - Designated hitter Ryan Meehan went 4-for-4 with a run batted in and a run scored to lead the University of Illinois at Chicago to an 8-4 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Sunday morning at the USA Baseball Complex Classic at the USA Baseball Complex.

The Dolphins opened the scoring in the contest with two runs on one hit in their first time at-bat. Sophomore right fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) walked on five pitches to lead off the inning. After moving to third on a ground out and a wild pitch, Botsford scored on a single to center field by senior left fielder Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City).

After being held scoreless through the first three innings, the Flames scored eight times between the fourth and seventh innings. UIC got on the board in the fourth frame with one run on two hits. Matt Serna and Meehan opened the inning with back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice bunt, Ryan Boss knocked in Serna with a ground out.

UIC added three runs on four hits in the fifth inning. Andy Leonard and John Rosinski singled in between fly outs. Serna followed with a triple to right center to drive in Leonard and Rosinski. Meehan then doubled to left field to score Serna with the final run of the inning.

The Flames tacked on three runs on three hits and an error in the sixth inning. Boss and Steve McGuiggan singled around a Le Moyne pitching change and a strike out. Leonard then singled through the left side to load the bases. After Rosinski struck out, Chris Rutta reached on a fielding error that cleared the bases and gave UIC a 7-2 lead.

UIC posted its final run on two hits in the seventh inning. Meehan doubled to left center to lead off the frame and moved to third on a sac bunt. Boss then singled to left center to drive in Meehan.

The Dolphins rallied for two runs on three hits and an error in the ninth inning, but could not cut into their deficit any further. Senior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) tripled to left center on a 3-1 pitch to open the inning. Sophomore shortstop Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) followed with a triple of his own to plate Marra and scored on a throwing error by the UIC shortstop.

Sophomore lefty Mark Kuzma (Waverly, N.Y./Waverly) took the loss for the Dolphins after allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits over five innings pitched. Charlie Weinberg earned the win for the Flames by striking out three batters, while yielding two runs on just one hit over five innings. Michael Heesch picked up the save by tossing the final four innings.

Le Moyne (2-2), which capped its opening weekend with two wins for the second time in three seasons, returns to action at 2009 College World Series participant Southern Miss on Friday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. EST.
